Of course that report could slow the influx into the state... Hmmm?

Speaking of influx, it was reported that for the first time in many years, more people are moving from Florida than into. I have no link, I just heard it from the Director of our Human Resources department who keeps up on those things.

I don't think this thread was started to have any meaningful discussion of crime statistics. Censusdata seems to feel there's some kind of Kentucky/Tennessee rivalry and generally just drops by to point out something better about Kentucky than Tennessee. I guess I don't see the point to the whole thing but each to their own. And, for the record, I think there's some pretty country in Kentucky and some great people. I've always thought of Kentucky and Tennessee as "brother-sister" states, so I don't have anything negative to say about the fine folks there.

even crime statistics that are for a big city are misleading as there are very safe areas and very unsafe areas in big cities.

However, to rank a-- state-- on its crime rate is actually ludicrous.

Those numbers moving numbers are flawed right now because really no one can move. I would be one of the numbers moving out but I know of 3 families that would be moving in.

It is going to take another couple of years before those numbers are meaningful

Until the housing slump started, FL was gaining over 600 people per day: some moving out but more moving in. Sunshine, beaches, etc. attract people who are tired of snowy winters. Now, the construction people are leaving FL because there are no jobs. We still had more people move into the state than left last year, but the total gain was MUCH smaller than in past years.

There are 2 main reasons--besides lack of work--that people are leaving FL: the property taxes are outrageous because there's no state income tax and a relatively low sales tax; and homeowners' insurance is going up every year if you're not cancelled just because you live within 25 miles of the coast. My mom's house just cancelled, and mine will be cancelled in 2009. Therefore, we must switch to Citizen's, the more expensive state insurance. Consider yourselves lucky that you seldom get hurricanes.

Also, crime in the big cities in FL probably make even Memphis look tame. Even small towns like mine are getting more crime.

We moved to the Tri-Cities area from Jacksonville, FL. Jacksonville had 152 homicides last year. Thankful to be in TN.

I recall once having to drive through the middle of Jacksonville, instead of taking the bypass, where someone was taking potshots at passing vehicles.

Of course, we had that up in Cocke County not too long ago.
