License check points?? (Knoxville, Chattanooga, Shelbyville: insurance, inspection, live)

Do these really exist in TN?

It was mentioned to me that these do exist but I want to confirm this with you nice people.

If so aren't these against the 4th Ammendment to the Constitution?

And NO I would have no worries or nothing to hide whatsoever if I ever encountered such.

License check points (more commonly referred to as "DUI Checkpoints") do exist. Mostly in rural areas. They would be hugely disruptive in urban areas, and I've never seen one in Hamilton county.

Courts have consistently ruled that they are not against the 4th amendment as long as certain criteria are met. The stops must be consistent and/or random. No profiling. The roadblock must be established ahead of time by supervisors and not by patrolmen on the spot. No searching other than a visual inspection of open items and a whiff of the air coming out the window.

Otherwise, they cannot search your car at a checkpoint without consent or a warrant. Be aware that it's incredibly easy for a police officer to obtain a warrant for a vehicle search thanks to the ongoing war on drugs. "I thought I smelled drugs" can be considered probable cause.

Not DUI as it would be Driving Under the Influence (a frigid day in Hell before that would happen to me) but an actual Drivers License check to make sure that the driver actually has a Drivers License and may be asked to provide Registration and or Insurance documentation - this is what I was told.

Certain criteria = with me I'd no doubt be pulled over as my car has NJ license plates.

Supreme court rulings = Obama's country transformation, well maybe not but I'm sure his stamp of approval is on this.

I think the law says they have to give notice before a checkpoint is set up. I saw in the Shelbyville times that there are two planned in Bedford county this month.

I think these are a good thing. I read the paper online and it is disturbing to see the number of people driving on revoked licenses, without insurance and being busted for their 4th + DUI.

On the other hand the Rutherford county Sheriffs department is sitting out on the interstate every day fishing for cash and drugs. It is a profitable little side business for them but does nothing to protect and serve the county taxpayers.

Just because *you* aren't drinking doesn't mean everyone else is sober. I've lost close friends in wrecks caused by drunk drivers. Bring on the checkpoints.

And I realize it is currently in vogue with a certain segment of the population to blame our current president for every inconvenience in life, but checkpoints have been around since before he was born. Look it up. No, I did not vote for him either time, and I don't particularly like him, but he is our president and he is not a Kenyan, a Muslim, the Antichrist, or Satan reborn.

I'm not against DUI checkpoints as you proved in your explanation why I also think it's essential.

But I was questioning the amount of Drivers License checks as I'm a lifelong NJ resident have never heard of these here nor have I ever been involved in any check by law enforement here. So to me this is a "novelty" in a matter of speaking.

If all goes as planned I'm driving to the Knoxville area on Tuesday or Wednesday for my first visit in TN ever and look forward to the mostly wonderful people.

I have lived in TN for 10 years as of last month. I have never had to pass through a checkpoint in TN during that time.
