Default Any feedback on Alcoa, Rockford, and/or Maryville

Just wanted some feedback from people that know the area. We are hoping to move within the next year or two. We were just up there getting an idea as to where we would like to relocate however, there are quite a few towns that we love.

Hubby and I would like to be close a city. We don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere on a ton of land. We are only looking for an acre or 2. We are even considering moving to Knoxville but don't want to go any more North then Knoxville and anymore West then Farragut. We were thinking Alcoa, Rockford, Maryville or Knoxville. Any feedback? We'd like a 3 bed 2 bath 2 car garage (a normal house). And I would like to be close to shopping, a Target, PetsMart, etc. I'd like to be able to see the mountains too. Are there any places to work in Maryville, Alcoa or Rockford or is Knoxville the place to find jobs? I'm a born and raised Florida girl...never lived outside of the county I was born in so this whole re-location thing is very new to me. We don't have any kids....we may or may not have them. We do have 2 pugs though so a dog friendly area would be nice. Maybe a nice park close by to take them. And even a leash free dog park if there are any.

Can anyone provide some feedback? Pros, cons, etc etc?

Just wondering if Maryville/Alcoa/Rockford had work in it or would a drive to Knoxville be better for work? Are these towns to far to drive every day for work? Is there still land there (1-2 acres)? I think I specified all the specifics that we are looking for...just looking for some feedback. Thank you.

Well, the work thing depends on what type of work you want. They are adding a technical area, like an industrial park, but this will be geared toward tech jobs. I forgot who is going to be the first in it. Maryville is growing. They have a mall, Target, SuperWalmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and more. Most any other store you would need is not far down Pellissippi Parkway (I think it is listed as 140 on a map- I'm not sure if it is officially an interstate, but it is like one). There are many restaurants and they keeping adding more.
Check out the Maryville paper at :www.thedailytimes.com
They have jobs, houses, and you can see in general what is going on.
I'm not really sure about housing, but I know in Knoxville headed to Maryville on Maryville Pk the newer homes do not have much land. You know in those cookie cutter subdivisions. If you look around, you can probably find a house that isn't too old that has some land.
There are several parks in Maryville, but as far as I know the only off the leash dog park is in Knoxville. It is also close to the Smoky MT National Park which has trails and areas you could take the dog on the leash. Here is the link to Maryville/Blount Co. parks: http://www.parksrec.com/
A work commute between Maryville and Knoxville would depend on what part of town you were going. Downtown should take 20-30 minutes. West would probably be about the same, but traffic is bad on that side of town. In my family, there have been 4 people work at Alcoa and live in South Knoxville. It takes about 20 minutes. My dad was on of those. Like if he worked 6-2, he would be home at 2:20. By 2:30, it's time to worry because it rarely took any longer than 20 minutes.
To me, Maryville and Alcoa are basically the same place. I'm sure living there you know where each one is, but just visiting you don't really know the difference. It's like one side of the street is Alcoa and the other side of the street is Maryville. Rockford isn't much of anything. It's just a little spot where there is a name change between Knoxville and Maryville as you go down Maryville PK.
Hope that helps a little. If you narrow down the work field for us, we might can help you decide which is better Maryville or Knoxville.

I think Maryville is beautiful. Just such a pretty town.

Aren't there elevated cancer rates in Alcoa? It seems that I read that somewhere? It had to do with the Alcoa plant and the Oak Ridge aquifer? I can't find info on it anymore, so I might have dreamed the whole thing! I think I read about it in the News-Press when I first moved here.

I've never seen a report on it. I know that some men in the Alcoa plant have had cancer. Out of the four in my family working there, an uncle has had a small patch of skin cancer (which is probably more from being in the sun alot). I don't really know anyone who lives near the plant.

Post Pets in Park, cancer, living

ALCOA the company was in the news last year because of a man who won a case against them - not the city. A man's daughter had died from cancer "caused" by asbestos clinging to his clothes from his job.

Water - kind of depends where you're coming from. People swim, ski, fish and boat in the lakes around here but I won't let my dog in them. She comes out smelling like a sewer. (She does swim in mountain rivers - she's a swimming addict and these are the best option for her.) I do worry about where the surface water comes from - hazmat alley. Maryville is supposed to have very good drinking water and I've seen the most recent reports - they're well within national standards for 'known' contaminants.

Dogs are NOT permitted on trails in National Parks. Nor are they allowed off leash. All local cities have leash or control laws and there is a dog park in Knoxville just north of Farragut (Lovell Rd and I140) Of course people do what they want and I see dogs running free all over the place but it is illegal. I've been here for 2 years and would return to CA in a heartbeat but the main problem for me is the hot humid weather. This year (can you say DROUGHT?) has been heavenly compared to last year!
Maryville has about 25k people, Alcoa 7k and it's not far to Turkey Creek for fancy shopping. PetsMart is in West Knox - a pain to get to - but I haven't found a decent pet supply store any closer yet. Lenoir City and Friendsville are also alternative places to live. Knoxville is about 500k population so they will offer most work opportunities. Compitition is stiff for skilled work but you can have as many minimum wage jobs as you can fit in You might be surprised by how many manufacturers and factories are out in the boonies! Find a job first - then move close to it. Commuting between here and Knox is no big deal. Roads are in decent shape but very crowded. I know many people who live in Knoxville and work in Maryville and vice-versa.
