According to the
Tennessee Department of Labor , there are 160,869 job openings in Tennessee with an average advertised wage of $41,390. Keep in mind that not all advertised jobs post salaries. The state unemployment rate is 4.9% with 153,800 Tennesseans unemployed. In theory, there are enough available jobs for Tennessee's unemployed. As you can see, however, the jobs are not evenly distributed throughout the state. Here's how each county stacks up.

Very interesting data. Not overly surprising...the job centers have more jobs. Only Coffee and Hamblen are outside of the top 20 in population.

The real thing would be to spread the jobs by skills required vs skills available. I suspect that many places can't find enough skilled workers even with all the unemployed out there. It really shows up in some communities where the number of jobs exceeds the number of available workers, yet there is still unemployment.

I almost posted the jobs/unemployed ratio for each county and metro area but just ran out of time. I might do it later tonight. You're right that some counties seem to be pretty balanced such as Sumner and Shelby. The stats also show that just because an area has a low unemployment rate (such as Warren, 4.3%), it won't necessarily be easy to find a job since there are still a lot more people unemployed (800) than there are jobs available (380).
The table also shows that much of rural Tennessee is still mired in unemployment problems while places like Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga are doing fine (especially Nashville).

This is the proper way to look at it. By looking at the county figures, you get good results for core counties, which ignores the hardships in surrounding rural counties. The core counties of Sullivan and Washington might be doing OK, but the surrounding counties like Carter, Hawkins, and Unicoi remain struggling and are a part of the local labor pool.

Thanks for the very interesting data. Cocke County, one of the poorest in the state, average advertised salary is currently the highest (over $52,000). What company is hiring there?

I would do an Indeed search and focus it narrowly around Newport. I can't imagine that figure being realistic/accurate.
