You'll need to take up the 'why don't we have a TARGET' with the Target people!
I've like in Cookeville since 1976 and can't imagine living anywhere else...though we did live in six different places the first 13 years of my life as my father climbed the corporate ladder.

I heard or perhaps read a rumor that a Target will be coming to Cookeville in the spring 2009. Did anyone else hear or read the same rumor?

Wordy, really nice to hear how happy you are there.
Wordy, I am so happy to hear that you are quite satisfied with your decision to move to Cookeville. It is so refreshing to read something so positive and hopeful.
Thanks for your post. (I'd rep you, but the rep fairies told me I did too many in the last 24 hrs. Don't know how many you are allowed, but... if I like what I hear, I want to rep it! I'll catch up to you soon, though, Wordy. )

I've been hearing rumors about Target going to Cookeville for the last year or so. I've heard that the owners of the Cookeville Mall (the Stites family of J&S Construction) are trying to redevelop the entire mall (only JCPenney will stay) and include a Target. I've also heard that Target is going where the Norwalk factory is right now. It's true that Norwalk has sold their factory to a shopping center developer out of Atlanta and is moving their factory to Overton County, but whether or not it's going to be a Target is anyone's guess. But I hope it's true!

Glad to hear the great comments about Cookeville. I've done a bit of research on the web and it looks like a nice place.
Hubby and I will be there next week when he has a job interview at TNTech.
We're way down south right now and all of my family is up north, so I'm looking to get a bit closer to them. Plus I am sick of the heat in the summer.
We currently live in a town the size of Cookeville, so I'm used to the small town life. However, we are at least 2 hours from any big towns, major airports, etc. Cookeville seems to be more conveniently located.
Does any body know about the ethnic restaurants there? All we have is Mexican, Chinese or Deep-fried Buffets.

Hmmm, other than Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, German, and French, there's not much ethnic stuff in Cookeville. I wish they had some good Indian food. But even Knoxville (pop. 700,000) has only 2-3 Indian restaurants.
Good luck to your hubby on his job interview! Tech is a fantastic university, and Cookeville is one of the nicest towns in Tennessee. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

I was in Cookeville yesterday, met some friends for lunch downtown. I hope you'll have time to wander around the area around the Depot downtown. There are some really neat stores and some GREAT cafes and restaurants. There are also a couple of art galleries that look interesting. The Cookeville Children's Museum is also in that neighborhood.
We had lunch at Cafe Trio which is on North Cedar just a half block north of the Depot. Live music, great sandwiches and homemade pizza. We then walked around the corner to The Intrepid Traveler, a funky coffee shop/dessert place on West Broad directly across from the Depot. The owners are from Montreal and fell in love with Cookeville when he helped a Canadian book company relocate to Cookeville last year.
A couple of doors down from The Intrepid Traveler is a really, really good sushi place called Taiko. Exposed brick walls, friendly service, excellent food.
If you go east from the Depot on Broad Street into the historic West Side area, check out Crawdaddy's, a really good Cajun place with outdoor seating (it was nice enough yesterday that people were eating outside).
I picked up a copy of the local paper which has listings of some of the cultural things going on in Cookeville. Among them:
The symphony performed some Mozart, there are several art showings in town, open mic concerts and other live music at various restaurants and clubs, student recitals on campus, theater workshops for children and adults, and auditions for plays at the Drama Center downtown.

Thanks for the great tips JMT. I'm looking forward to our visit.
Thai, German and French are more than we have where we are now. I agree that Indian would be an excellent addition to any town too!
I'll probable have plenty of time on my own while my husband has his interviews, so I'll be sure to check out the downtown area. It sounds great. Our downtown/square where we live now is nice, but it's mostly lawyers' offices and antique shops - not too exciting.

We moved to Cookeville almost five years ago. We thought it would be a good move.
It wasn't. It was a GREAT move, far better than we ever hoped it would be-great people, lovely scenery, every service you could think of.
What don't I like? Well, it's tough to find hard rolls.....
