How cool! Thanks!

I can picture you seeing them and filing that away in the back of your mind.

Oh believe me, I thought of you when I saw them! But I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to seem like I was trying to talk you into moving away from Knoxville.

Next time you and your hubby and daughter have a day off, you might want to just hop in the car and head up to the Plateau, maybe have lunch in historic Rugby and head over to Jamestown then on down to the Muddy Pond Mennonite community near Monterey then to Cookeville just to check it out.

Kind of mixed around there: Comcast in Fairfield Glade, Charter in Crossville. Definitely Charter in Cookeville though.

JMT, I actually mentioned to Hik once before that I love the Muddy Pond/Jamestown, etc. area. It is truly lovely. I agree with you that the Hiknapster family would enjoy a road trip out that way!

Did you? Aging is a horrible thing!

Sounds like a road trip, for sure! I'm going to map it when I get home this afternoon!

Thanks all!

Well there you have it! If SMG and I both say you should check out that area, you should check out that area. My only condition is you MUST take some pictures and share with us.

I do love the Muddy Pond area. It's not hyper touristy like the Pennsylvania Dutch area, but it is certainly a relaxing way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I really think you'll like Rugby, too. It doesn't take long to see the entire village, but it's absolutely fascinating. Big South Fork National Recreation Area is right next door and has some breathtaking vistas.

The little town of Jamestown is quaint and authentic. By authentic, I mean it's not cutesy and definitely not touristy. But it's clean and attractive. It was also almost the birthplace of Mark Twain. Oh, and if you are able to get to nearby Pall Mall you should see the Alvin York home. If your daughter hasn't learned about Alvin York yet in school, this will be a wonderful way for her to learn about one of Tennessee's most beloved heroes.

Let us know if you want some more suggestions! I can't wait for you to go check it out.

I'll have to figure out the logistics.

First, I need to fix my camera or get a new one. I hate the one I have so I will probably do the latter.

The big problem is that my husband and I never have a day off together. That's what happens when one is a business owner.

We'll both be off tomorrow, but Lauren has oral surgery so a field trip won't be in the works.

However, I can't wait to go! Thanks, JMT!

I'm sorry to be so long in replying. I haven't been stopping in here as much lately.

There are many very nice neighborhoods in Cookeville. I live in Devon Park, off Gibbons, west side of 111, just outside Algood. I like the location...close to a very nice little post office in Algood, close to WalMart if I need something quickly, doesn't take all that long to get into town.

This particular neighborhood is not friendly. Only one couple has made us feel welcome. Some people have actually turned their backs when we go outside. After living here for 15 months, I made cookies and we took them to the neighbors and introduced ourselves. Unfortunately, most of the wives weren't home when we went, so I still haven't met them. And people still don't speak until I make a point of hollering hello to them. And it's becoming renter's heaven, which I don't think adds to the value of a neighborhood. Not that I have anything against renters, but we are becoming surrounded by rentals. And then there's the sign at the entrance to the subdivision which has been vandalized and no one will accept responsibility for repairing it. I might look into tearing it down as it looks extremely tacky.

We had three days to find a house. We really needed a basement for husband's multiple hobbies and I needed decent storage in my kitchen as I like to cook and entertain and so have a lot of equipment. It was hard to find both in a house and this was the only one that came close to meeting those two needs, but it lacks several other things I would have wanted. Of course, if we could have afforded a more upscale house, I might have had better luck. We needed to pay cash. We paid $23,000 more for this house than what we sold our previous house for and it has fewer features. But the big disappointment has been that it was very poorly kept up and all we have been doing is repairing and redecorating (ok, I expect to redecorate). The house was left very dirty, even the refrigerator and oven. Disgusting! It's just been discouraging to be spending at least two years trying to get the place in shape. We just had upgraded, painted, replaced carpet, etc. in the house we sold. Spent a lot of money to do it and we are starting all over again. It's slow because we spent all our savings to move here, so have to wait until we have the money to do each thing.

So that's why I don't like the neighborhood or house. But I LOVE Cookeville and fortunately have made many friends outside of the neighborhood. I would tell anyone to move here. (Just not to Devon Park ) It's a great town. Not perfect, but I am very happy here.

Thanks so much for your very honest report about your experiences in Cookeville. It's such a shame that your neighbors haven't been friendlier. Maybe because it's a largely rental neighborhood (transient?) explains part of it. But thankfully you've been able to make friends anyway and are able to see the positives of your new area in spite of some cold-shouldered neighbors.

what struck me about cookeville was the high house prices ... Ithought they;d be a lot cheaper than Mt. Juliet..not so..so why would you want to live so much further out with fewer services and shopping? If the cost of living was a lot lower it makes sense..I heard the prices were up cause its "hot" now...Maybe Crossville is cheaper? How is that compared to Cookeville?
