Looking for heaven
My wife and I live in Atl. Ga. and we have had enough. We are looking for a small town in the mountains of Tn. where the view and the snow is plentiful. We want a place where the people are friendly and we don't have to drive too far to shop. We are both in our early 40's and want a simple life and avoid all the stress of the big city. But we want a place that is near hospitals and golf courses. Where home prices aren't out of control.

The mountains are in east Tennessee, so that's where you want.
For medium sized towns with hospitals, shops, and golf courses, I would suggest Greeneville, Johnson City, and Kingsport. For small towns close to those, I would check a map, but personally, I would suggest Bluff City, Blountville, Gray, or possibly Erwin (depending). There are tons of rural areas within 15-20 minutes of the medium sized towns. What I'm describing to you is NE Tennessee.
I am not familiar with the SE part of Tennessee. Hopefully someone else can put their 2 cents worth in.
I think you need to come up for visit and check it out.

I'm definitely coming to TN, NC, VA, WV, and KY this summer to check out the mountains in each state. I'm just dying to live in a mountain home and it must be the next best thing to Heaven because that will be my final home.

Want to really escape to paradise with all those things...like some surreal postcard??? Tennessee is great. I live on Signal Mountain but you are obviously FINANCIALLY ABLE to uproot or you would not want to move to Tennessee where there are no decent jobs or wages.
If you have made your dough and want to live in wonderland, move to CAPE BRETON NOVA SCOTIA. Land is ver reasonable and Americans with solvency can live there with no problem. You will never regret that I told you this. Just don't tell anyone

Thanks, but Canada would be way to cold for me and too much snow, no thanks!
Cute idea though.

What does the original poster call a small town? .
I get twitchy when the population goes over about 35,000 and I suppose you have to take into consideration the land size and if it's a tourist town, too. I've heard people who live in big cities call places with populations of 72,000, small towns. But for me, that's more than two times bigger than any place I've ever lived since being an adult and I could not handle that.
The poster says he lives in Atlanta (population about 417,000). He probably thinks a town of 75.000 - 100,000 is a small town. City Data calls any place over 6,000 a bigger town.

Signal Moutain, do you know anything regarding the Alexian brothers there. It to me seems like an ideal idea, however,
Alice thru the looking glass had ideas also?
I know you, pay an upfront fee, and monthly, then you get care forever til?
Any thoughts opinions etc.,?

How funny! I get twitchy if the population goes over 2,000. Even much smaller would be fine with me.

I too, am looking to move out of Atlanta. I've been here only 3 years, and I'm ready to go. Not for the reasons you are though, I haven't quite reached the "40 somethings" and still enjoy an upbeat pace. I'm in the Vinings area, but have lived all over Atl.
I am a native of Tennessee, born in Memphis and have lived for several years in Chattanooga. It's true, east Tennessee is definetly your target are for mountains. This means around the Chattanooga area within a 100 mile radius. The south is full of "small towns" so this won't be an issue. Signal mountain is pricey though. I don't know how much you're looking to spend, I used to work on Signal Mountain caring for patients in their homes as a nurses aide, now I'll be graduating in May with my nursing degree. Those homes are for the upper class. Even the small, older house in not cheap. It's scenic and tight knit and exclusive. Doctors, CEOs, Lawyers and the like mostly populate Signal Mountain, with plenty of stay at home moms. It's only minutes from downtown though, if you want to go to the city sometime.
I am looking to go west, California. Good luck, hope you find your dream town!
