I don't like the lack of decent-paying jobs.
As you get out of the major areas you run into rural areas pretty quickly, where there can be ignorance, a lack of education and its values, racism and hostility. |

Summer heat? Come and live here in south Texas if you want summer heat.
High heat, VERY high humidy, large amounts of "skeeters", and 3 inch cockroaches. |

Wasnt the state trying to do something to improve this?
I love the thought of being able to get out of the city in a few minutes. Unlike SFLA where you have to drive 6 hours to get out of the city. |

I agree. I thought that getting to the country in minutes was fantastic, initially. What I find unsettling is that you can find some of the same conditions in the country that you find in the inner city. I should qualify these comments by saying that I am posting about Knoxville, which I don't believe the OP is interested in anyway. |

I am originally from Greeneville, and the bad things I can say:
1. It can be a bit clannish; some are very weary of outsiders coming in and changing the culture. 2. Good ole boy network. This kind of pertains to the first one. It is all about who you know, not necessarily your credentials. 3. Lack of good paying jobs. I'm sure there are some other things, but they really aren't that big of a deal. More fine dining restaurants would be nice (the only ones I can think of is in the General Morgan Inn & Danielle's). Last edited by AppalachianAngler; 02-19-2008 at 06:45 PM. |

I have lived in North East TN now for almost 12 years. Almost 6 of those were in Greene Co. I agree with everything said above. I would also add that the shopping/commercial seems to be very spread out, haphazardly placed, no sign if real city planning. I now live in the Tri-Cities area (Washington Co.) and about the only thing negative I can say about this area is what Willyboy said, the power lines get in the way of the views and my pictures. But seeing as I don;t want my taxes to go up to pay for them being put underground, I can deal with it. ![]() |
