Default Look out TN, Georgia's comin'!

Georgia is trying to take over a mile wide strip of Tennessee. Part of the TN River and part of Chattanooga included.

Water war between the states is for real | ajc.com

The crux of Georgia's complaint revolves around "a flawed survey conducted in 1818 and never accepted by the State of Georgia,"

Apparently it has been acceptable for 200 years.

Acceptable at their convenience; now unacceptable at their convenience.

Arrgh! From what I understand this is all due to their unregulated growth, resulting in too much demand for water, that they can't supply.

Let this be a lesson to all of us, communities large and small, and as a nation as well!

You can't hesitate to place limitations upon the number of people your area can accommodate! Here's an example of the kind of thing that happens when you just let people flood in and develop like crazy.

Gee, they are going to wear that story out. It was on the national news last night and every day the local stations have to repeat it . . . over and over.

Well, if Georgia get its way in court, the Native Americans tribes might have a good claim to all of Georgia and Tennessee.

Better than Georgia's claim on an inch of Tennessee territory. The Cherokee had a favorable supreme court ruling before Jackson (spit) sent the army in to round up the tribe.

If Georgia gets its way, the new state line would have to extend all the way to the Mississippi River. So on the bright side, that means part of Memphis would now become Mississippi's problem...

Cool Come on, GA politicians and dreamers. You are embarrassing your constituents!

I think the whole situation is embarrassing! I don't know if any of you voted in the poll that AJC had included in the article, but when I voted "NO" to resetting the boundary lines, I was pleased to see that among the almost 2000 votes only 54% voted "YES" to changing the line.

There never would have been any kind of survery published in the first place if Georgia wasn't already aware of the fact that the boundary line was probably mistaken. But, for all of these 200 years it was not in GA's best interests to claim that 1 mile deep piece of TN.

In most states there is a law concerning property lines not being negotiable after so many years. It is a Right of Use type of law stating that if a neighbor's fence (as an example) infringes on a neighbor's property by inches or a foot (any amount) and the neighbor does not protest within so many years, then the neighbor with the fence can claim that bit of property his own.

In NJ it is called Property by Prescription or Adverse Possession (20 yr. uncontested use allows the non-owner to claim the property that he has been using for an easement - i.e. driveway, fence, tree line, etc. as his own.)

It seems to me that use of property for 200 years without being contested should determine that the fenceline belongs the neighbor who has been using it and caring for it all of those years.

When the hot air coming out of Georgia's political yahoos hits the chilly cloud of shoulders of Tennessee's stand-firm Volunteers, rain should fall and GA may finally be wet again and dry behind the ears!!

This is the craziest thing I ever heard. Acceptable until their water supply ran low, so now they have to try and steal water from TN using any method they can think of. Maybe ASKING for help would work better ya think? Instead, they started a fight that won't solve their problem because it will be tied up in court, costing both states big bucks to do battle with one another.
