Context certainly seems to be lacking.

8. Pigeon Forge

It's positively terrifying after dark. Hordes of kids hopped up on taffy roaming around the mini-golf courses.

Yeah places like Pigeon Forge shouldn't be included, or at least there should be an asterisk by them. These crime stats are based on resident population. On any given day there are probably three times as many visitors as there are residents in Pigeon Forge, probably even more during weekends and tourist seasons. So while there might be 40,000 people in Pigeon Forge on a given day, the crime stats are based on the resident population which is only 6,100 or so.

And, really, any place whose daytime population is higher than the resident population will have its crime stats skewed, sometimes by quite a bit.

I've been in Gatlinburg before when the vibe was real, real weird. It was early April maybe 8pm. Just me, my ex and some weird lookin dudes out on the sidewalks. I'm pretty 'urban-comfortable' and street smart, but we went ahead and drove back down to Pigeon Forge quickly. Definitely no taffy kids that day!

I had a client the other day from La Follette, and he was telling me how bad the crime was there, for a city it's size. I compared it to Newport, KY which is in northern KY and I know it to be a high crime area as I worked there, and La Follette was much higher in crime. So now when I compare cities in TN to each other on crime I use La Follette as my comparison. Something did happen to me on our trip out to Columbia and Cookeville. My mastercard got compromised. I am suspecting the hotel. I didn't use my card for much while I was down there except the hotel. Never had this happen to me before. Hoping it wasn't the local Columbia hotel, it could have been with the chain as they keep your card "on file".

I've seen this question come up on the forum a few times about Crime in TN. It is high, and surprises me when I see high numbers in small towns. Crossville is very high, and Sparta is higher than Newport KY, which is basically gang crime. So, I figure the way crime is reported in TN must have something to do with this? As most people say they feel safe in their cities.

Pretty much, yes. It has been discussed a number of times on this forum, here is an older post of mine that has a link with some info that covers crime reporting in Tn. http://www.city-data.com/forum/36615494-post18.html
If you search the TN forum for 'crime' you will pull up lots of lively threads on the topic.

What are you considering crime in regards to being unsafe.
I often look at the court docket and police report for Crossville/Cumberland Co. and the majority are shoplifting, revoked DL, a few simple possessions and public intoxication, perhaps a trespass and domestic assault. Not that we dont occasionally have major theft, assaults and murders as do all communities.

I think the best way to judge is to actually read the police reports and court dockets.
