Wow, LauraC, I just looked at E. TN radar on weather.com. If that front hits TN - and it looks like it will - you folks are in for some possible icing and snow conditions again!

TnHilltopper, you are right about it being more of a Nov./April winter. I hadn't thought of it like that, but that is exactly what it has been.

It does give a bit of credence to the greenhouse effect theory and the 7 year cycle theory. I haven't been much of a record tracker, but it does seem that the weather is very cyclical.

I wish more people would take the earth's issues to heart and try to live green - recycle and let's replace fossil fuels.

Well there was a recent interesting program on Discovery Science channel that discussed how the solar cycles effect our climate and the new field of study that is opening up. Alone, the 11 year solar cycle does not have a very noticeable effect, but with changes in our climate, the solar cycles can have a more profound effect than they normally would alone.

There seems to be a consensus in the scientific community that the earth's temps have risen by .8 degrees F. While this is unlikely to turn Wisconsin into the Sahara, it does certainly change rain, wind, jet stream, and ocean patterns enough for us to notice them. I have also noticed that many garden books are moving the, "zones" up a notch. In other words, what was zone 6 two years ago, is now more or less a zone 7.

I would hope that all people realize the earth is like one giant swimming pool in which we all drink from as well as swim in. So if a bunch of kids on the other side of the pool wet their britches, do you really want to drink the water on your side of the pool? (I know its a nasty analogy but sometimes shock value is warranted)

There's a wind advisory today (Tuesday 3/4/08) for driving with a separate special caution to high profile vehicles in these places:

CLAIBORNE-HANCOCK- HAWKINS-SULLIVAN-ANDERSON-UNION- GRAINGER- HAMBLEN-NORTHWEST COCKE- NORTHWEST GREENE-WASHINGTON TN- NORTHWEST CARTER-ROANE-LOUDON-KNOX- JEFFERSON-NW BLOUNT- NORTH SEVIER-RHEA- MEIGS-MCMINN-NORTHWEST MONROE-HAMILTON- BRADLEY- WEST POLK-LEE-WISE-SCOTT- RUSSELL-WASHINGTON- INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...TAZEWELL...SNEEDVILLE... ROGERSVILLE... KINGSPORT...BRISTOL... CLINTON...OAK RIDGE...MAYNARDVILLE... RUTLEDGE...MORRISTOWN...NEWPORT... GREENEVILLE...JOHNSON CITY... ELIZABETHTON...KINGSTON...LENOIR CITY...KNOXVILLE...DANDRIDGE... MARYVILLE...SEVIERVILLE...DAYTON... DECATUR...ATHENS... MADISONVILLE... CHATTANOOGA...CLEVELAND...BENTON... JONESVILLE... WISE...GATE CITY... LEBANON...ABINGDON

What exactly is a high profile vehicle? Is it a tractor trailer, a car towing something, a regular truck, a van, a hummer, etc? Does it have to do with height or weight?

When I lived in Maryland, certain vehicles were not allowed on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, during very windy days.

Unrelated to this weather alert, when I was driving on I-40 Sunday, I saw a tractor trailer drive by a weighing station without stopping when all the other trucks stopped. If I was in Maryland, I would have called it in for suspicious activity. You know the eletronic overhead signs on the highways in Tennessee that say "Booze it ot lose it" referring to drinking and your diver's license? Well, on Maryland highways the signs have to do with a tip line for reporting suspicious activity (since 9/11).

A high-profile vehicles is anything that is a bit "top heavy" or easily affected by the wind. An RV or towed trailer would be the best examples.

Hmmmmm...I guess some pedestrians shouldn't be out walking today, either.

Yes, Dolly Parton has to stay inside during weather like this . . .

;-)

A VW bus.
I used to have one and if a semi truck went by me to fast, the wind from the truck would about push me off the road! Defiantly a fair weather driving vehicle only!

So what I'm hearing is Dolly Parton in a VW bus is doomed today.

The worst thing would be Dolly Parton in a VW bus with an elephant on top and pulling a trailer with a herd of giraffes in it.

If anyone knows Dolly personally, they should call her and warn her about this.

I was up well before the sun today as the roaring sound of the wind set in for an uneasy sleep last night. I went and walked the place and realized I have about two weeks worth of picking up dead branches and trimming some trees. I didn't even bother to walk the forest.

I don't know about you folks, but since I live right at the break of the western escarpment of the plateau. (looking down) wind is something I pay attention to since my unique geography forces the wind from the valley into a funnel and dumps it right on one side of my property. So what may be a mild breeze in Cookeville or Livingston, it like a steady 15-20mph wind here. This entire winter has been day after day of fairly strong winds, making me wonder, what the heck the spring storm season is going to be like.

Ah maybe I'll get lucky and have the last 10 skeeters blown off the mountain.

Is this something that has been happening to other Plateau folks?
