I asked my wife, who is a native from Crossville, and she said 19 below on the plateau, 1983 or 84. Snowing now, ground turning white. 33 degrees. Burr.

OK I was about to call BS on this one and by chance checked noaa government weather site for temperature extremese by city. Sure enough it shows -24 degrees for Knoxville in January. Doesnt say when. The scary thing is the next line up is Rapid City way way north near Canada and their record is -27 degrees. -24 degrees in Knoxville means about -40 on Mt. Leconte in The Smokies. Now that's cold.

So apparently East Tennesse is not a good place for a heat pump for they are only good down to 32 degrees then your hit strips kick in. Its amazing for I have seen several houses for sale with heat pumps.

You are sooo right!!! I swear I don't understand why people around here have electric heat pumps. I used to live in a house with an electric heat pump and it was HORRIBLE. I could never get warm on those bone-chilling days when the thermometer dropped below 20. Now I live in a house with gas heat, and it is toasty warm.

You never have a heat pump without suplemental heat. Once it gets into the 20's you turn on the suplemental heat and then watch your electric bill go through the roof. Actually it's not that bad, relatively cheap electric rates in NE TN thanks to TVA hydroelectric plants.

I think, you go back to Tennessee board and right below the Memphis icon is the new thread icon. I believe that is right.

If you want to investigate
the weather for that time period here's a site. You can put in a date and get the weather for it.

Where is this on their site? I find noaa to be one of the worst sites to navigate I have ever seen.
Appreciate it.
