Hi
I have "Florida syndrome" as well, and can't wait to get out of here.
Hey, "Hicks", working for publix as well...lol. Have a dilemma.....
Hubby is from PA, I'm from Germany (have very close friends, like family, in knoxville), which are begging me (since about 10 years now)to move there. I LOVE TN!!! Always have...
One thing is for sure, we are out of FL, but, where to move to? PA or TN? Hubby and I are splitting hair over it.
We want to open up our own restaurant (regular steaks etc)., and my husband doesn't think, it would succeed in TN. I told him, it isn't so!
What is your input...any advice at all?
I am a meatcutter, my hubby a bartender....Would there be a job market in or around knoxville? (My friends claim "yes"!!)
We NEED to make a decent living, since FL left us nearly and virtually bankrupt!!!!

My vote is YES for any local owned, not chain restaurant! Not sure about Knoxville, but I know there are a lot of places in East TN area that have large gaps in places that SHOULD have restaurants, that aren't chains and don't. This is a huge industrial area, yet you see very few restaurants in the areas of the plants. If you could have a restaurant with a good variety of food (more than "meat and 3") and have the space for a banquet room, you could have a gold mine! These industries have reps. visiting from all over and the management like to have lunch meetings away from the plants. I see so many plants with no place around for them to go. Add a power point projector in that banquet room and train your wait staff to be good at customer service, and you are set! At least that is my opinion.
My family and I currently reside in Anderson, Indiana and are planning on moving to Cookeville in February. My cousin lives in Lakeland, Florida and is trying to convince us to move to that area claiming there are better job opportunities in that part of the country. My wife is leaning toward Cookeville due to the fact that my family has an empty house with 13 acres that we can move into right away. I also am concerned about school systems in both areas since we have 2 young children. My wife and I are in our early 40's with management experience in the restaurant and retail industry and are looking to pursue a new career right away. What area (Florida or Tennessee) would be the best place to start a new career and raise a family.
No doubt for me! Tennessee! Want to trade houses?LOL.

OMG
This makes so much sense, and it's funny that you mentioned that. At the place in PA, where my husband was working before, he had a large clientel with reps. traveling. We would never be involved in a chain type of thing...we rather leave that kind of thing up to other people, and it's not our cup of tea at all.
Down to earth food, that's where it's at, and that's what's all about. Good food, for the right and reasonable price.
Tell me something....where can I find any and everything concerning taxes in TN and such (don't want to bombard my friends with all the questions, and they might not know all the answers either)
Any leads, info, web links would be greatly appreciated!
I think I will start doing some homework, and look closer into things....
WE moved from NJ onto 5 acres and it's been ok, but school systems are not good. The taxes drove us out of NJ. Now the storms and home owners insurance are pushing us outta here just as soon as we can. For 8 years we've been visiting TN and I believe they call us half backs.........move from North to South then half way back. I miss the season change and the heat down here it just awful.

I live in Florida and want to move to tennessee. If you have children do not come to Florida the school system is very bad. The cost of living is high and no one can afford to buy a good home. And if you can move right into a house with 13 achers go for it! That would be the best place to raise your children. Good luck!

No, they don't call us really "half backs" anymore...they moved now to "floridiots"...lol
Well folks we have made the decision to move to Cookeville instead of Lakeland, Florida. I have done several hours of research and with the help of this forum I have made this decision. My family and I will be officially moved in by March 16. I am going to open my own retail business in April and my wife is going to work with me. It looks like my kids will be enrolling in Algood k-8 school after their spring break. If you have any information on this school please let me know. Thanks again for all your input.

Congratulations!! I think you made a great choice. We also had plans of relocating to Fla., but there's just too many negatives since we're not wealthy. We're also looking at Tn. I'm glad you came back and let everyone know that you chose Tn.
