One of our newest neighbors from CA, a retired police officer, paid 350K for a cabin and 5 acres. He has his own plane and he and his wife fly somewhere on Saturday mornings for breakfast.
Yeah, we tease him a little. He cut down all the trees and scrapes the dirt every other day with his huge tractor (for 2 years now). I think its to scare off the snakes his wife is terrified of. The two ginormous security lights that shine all night keep the nocturnal critters away and the round-up he sprayed along the chip and tar road to kill the grass washed down into the creek and killed all the fish ( I just hope none of it seeped into my well water) and he complains about the mud from our vehicles left behind on the chip and tar road but hey we still treat him neighborly and would and do help he and his wife out if ever they are in need. Live and let live.
I think they care about who buys the house as they are still attached to it and they also like their neighbors and neighborhood. And some CA folks can be obnoxious with their demands or complaints in a new area--CA has lots of social welfare things that are expensive.

And part of it is probably a lot like when I sold my house in the suburbs of Philly to a black person--the neighbors were very MAD and upset. Most everyone in the neighborhood was ethnically Polish since the 1910's when the neighborhood was formed. Lots of multiple generations of folks. She was the first black person to buy on our block. Yeah, I just said 'our' block, even though I was leaving. I liked the neighborhood, just needed a bigger house.

A year later I saw my next door neighbor, who shared a common walkway and back deck with my old house. They were so mad when they knew I sold the house to the black person they watched walk up to the house and look at it they would not even talk to me and my daughter the whole time the house was in escrow. She told me that they actually loved the new neighbor better than us. The lady's teenage son shoveled the snow off the deck and walkway every time it needed it and did it even during the day right after he got home from school. When I was at work they waited until I came home to shovel it. Their lazy son and daughter NEVER did it! And the adults were older and could not shovel snow, but they surely complained when I was at work and came home and made dinner before I shoveled it.

So I think its just the attitude, and in some places like OR there is also a jealousy as the people from CA are often retirees selling a house so they can buy a new one for a lower price with cash and fix it up. The locals are jealous as they can not pay for a house with cash. (And neither can most people who are not selling one for a more expensive area.)

And, yes they can have toys and act in a way that shows a lot of wealth that the other do not have...like planes to go to breakfast.

Wow, I didn't realize. And people have this idea that Tennesseans are racist and clickish. I have fortunately never personally seen attitudes taken to this level.

Default Thanks, Everyone!

I appreciate all of the replies. Gave me good insight and information. We will be visiting for 2 weeks in December and my husband is scheduled to take the exam for an Educational Leadership Certificate that will allow him to apply for admin jobs in Tennessee school districts. We are very excited at the prospect of leaving California. Again, thank you for the time you gave answering my questions.
