What an awesome thread!!!
I've lived in the Nashville are my entire life and haven't heard the Paper Clip story! Thanks for sharing.
I learned something a while ago....the street I lived on in Murfreesboro has a marker that states that "this spot is the middle most section of TN!" (Not those exact words but you get my drift)
MTSU actually beat out UT Knoxville a year or two for the most student enrollment.
The Hermitage (Hermitage, TN) is home of President Andrew Jackson! (I really should know more about this since I went to the Hermitage 8,000x's in Elementary school....lol)
GooGoo (the candy) stands for Grand Ole Opry.
Speaking of festivals:
Murfreesboro has an annual Jazz Fest in May!
Franklin has a Renaissance fair in May as well!

The KKK originated in a carriage house on Flower and 3rd in Pulaski. They moved to a private house on 2nd & College. The clan in Columbia came shortly after that. They were larger and a little more "rigorous". That is why most believe they originated in Pulaski.
Pulaski, now, has no room for hate groups.

Sorry Laura C one factoid needs correction!
The paved road to near the summit of Mt Mitchell in NC is at almost at 6,684 feet (Highest Point East of the Mississippi) see link at http://americasroof.com/nc.shtml (broken link). Unless the road has disintegrated since i drove it in 1971, it would be considerably higher than Clingman's Dome. I also remember that on my last visit there to Clingman's that there was a considerable hike up the trail to the tower. I remember it well as I was carrying a 9 month old daughter (both up and down)!

Just wantd to say "thank you" to every one who has made this thread so valuable and interesting. I love Tennessee.

Hi,
The Festival info is kept on the tennessee.gov site and there are also a couple of other festival clearinghouse sites.
Merry Christmas!

Clingman's Dome is at 6,643 feet. Being 41 feet lower than Mount Mitchell, I'd hardly call Mount Mitchell "considerably higher" than Clingman's Dome.
And the paved road at Mount Mitchell State Park in NC does not go all the way up to the peak. You still have to get out of the car and walk quite a bit. I was just there a few weeks ago.

The Farm is between Columbia and Lawrenceburg. Author Peter Jenkins visited there and wrote about it in "Walk Across America." I think he now lives somewhere in middle Tennessee.

We once went to a July 4th picnic atop Mt. Mitchell and nearly froze our cabooses off.

The closest Canadian town is Windsor, just across the river from Detroit.
