Default researching cookeville tennessee

We are looking to possibly relocate from the southern part of Illinois. Very hot and humid here in summer, short spring and fall and this year an even far worse winter than in recent times. And then there is the property taxes that are continually going up, up up. Lived here my entire life, no regrets, but looking for a new start.

Cookeville looks good online. Wondering if anyone can give me first hand info about the weather or point me to a tread that does. Would love to spend more time outdoors instead of just switching from cool to heat on the thermostat. Love open windows! Is this possible in Cookville

I have an 3 yr old, looks like the school system good in Cookeville. I also have an college age boy. What about the college. Is tution low cost?

Thanks so much. This forum has provided so much information. I would just really like to get specific questions answered.

Smile thanks jguillot

Thanks. I have studied city-data. Your right, lots of good information. I can also bring up the town I live in now, and it looks good to. If I already did not live here, I would consider it too! Do you live in Cookeville? Anyone? What was the recent summer like.

College info?

When I visited this past August, it was very hot, but I was told that we just happened to be there during unusually very hot weather. JMT can probably provide you with information on college info. I've sent you two private messages with links you can check out.

I promise you that the pictures at city-data are pretty representative of Cookeville. I did another thread a while back called "ugly Cookeville" or something like that, where I took pictures of some of the uglier parts of town and posted them. I'm on vacation right now in Utah and have limited internet access so I don't have time to look for the thread myself, but if you do a search for "ugly Cookeville" it should come up.

As far as the university, I don't know what the tuition is, but out of state tuition is always frightening. If your son wants to attend it, his best bet would be to establish residency in Tennessee first and work for a year or so before enrolling. That way he'll get in-state tuition. Then again, maybe he can qualify for some academic scholarships?

If you go to the university's web site, there should be information about tuition and what fields of study are available at Tennessee Tech University:
Tennessee Tech University

Your 3 year old, assuming you stay in Tennessee and assuming Tennessee still has the lottery 15 years from now, will get almost free tuition as long as she maintains a B average, I believe. All graduates of Tennessee high schools (and home schools) are given huge tuition discounts at Tennessee public universities as long as they maintain a certain GPA.

Good luck, and let us know what other questions you have. It looks like jguillot is doing a great job answering your questions without me.

Thanks, I will look for the ugly cookeville thread.

What about property taxes? I have read for example a $150K home, taxes will run around $600 dollars. Is that true?

Here is some tax info except Cookeville is $3.36
Property taxes in Tennessee are calculated utilizing the following four components:
  1. APPRAISED VALUE
  2. ASSESSMENT RATIO
  3. ASSESSED VALUE
  4. TAX RATE

The APPRAISED VALUE for each taxable property in a county is determined by the county property assessor.
The ASSESSMENT RATIO for the different classes of property is established by state law (residential and farm @ 25% of appraised value, commercial/industrial @ 40% of appraised value).
The ASSESSED VALUE is calculated by multiplying the appraised value by the assessment ratio.
The TAX RATE for each county is set by the county commission based on the amount of monies budgeted to fund the provided services. These tax rates vary depending on the level of services provided and the total value of the county’s tax base.
To calculate the tax on your property, assume you have a house with an APPRAISED VALUE of $100,000. The ASSESSED VALUE is $25,000 (25% of $100,000), and the TAX RATE has been set by your county commission at $3.20 per hundred of assessed value. To figure the tax simply multiply the assessed value ($25,000) by the tax rate (3.20 per hundred dollars assessed). $25,000 / 100 = 250 x $3.20 = $800.00

It can be very hot and humid here in the summer also. The spring and fall especially is never long enough for me. Winters are getting milder each year. I love to open up the window and let the breeze blow thru. Boy has it been breezy lately.

JMT is right,Cookeville is honestly about as good as it looks online. Not many places like that probably. Not without it's problems but pretty much as advertised.
Now,about the weather.Yes,Cookeville can be hot & humid in the summertime, just like the rest of the southeast. But last year was an aberration.More 100 degree days in a row in history I think. A good part of the year here you can usually have your windows open if you like.

I don't know exactly what TTU's tuition is but it's a state school so it'd be easy to find out.I know it's gone up a little recently but definitely still affordable.Probably get more "bang for your buck" at Tech than just about anywhere.Great academic institution of about 10,500 students(regardless of what city-data says...) in a good atmosphere.
Putnam County schools are great also,so your son will be in good hands.I have a 9 year old son myself & we love his school(Capshaw) but all of them are great. They stay ahead of the curve as far as building as well.Just broke ground on one & two more are in the drawing stages.
And the $3.36 tax rate 2mares mentioned is city & county combined AND includes the schools.Won't find many lower than that in Tennessee, especially for the quality of services provided.

Hope this helps some.
