If you find out what this one is, would you please let us know. It's so interesting looking. Was the stem long? I can ask my instructor next week. He just showed us a whole slideshow of flowers in the Smokies, yesterday, but I didn't see this until this morning.

It was much smaller than it looks in the pic. The stem was long and I would say that from top to bottom the plant was less than 8" total. The stem was very thin and I only saw two along the trail, but it caught my eye because it's so unusual. I will definitely let you know what it is if I find out.

Well, I didn't get a very good shot but here is a Pileated woodpecker which gets huge! This one had a wingspan of about 28 inches and was about 18 inches tall as best I could tell. I was zoomed way out and had no tripod so was hard to keep the camera still and this feller was fidgeting quite a bit.
Of course the lazy mutt is enjoying the porch already.
