It was much smaller than it looks in the pic. The stem was long and I would say that from top to bottom the plant was less than 8" total. The stem was very thin and I only saw two along the trail, but it caught my eye because it's so unusual. I will definitely let you know what it is if I find out.

Well, I didn't get a very good shot but here is a Pileated woodpecker which gets huge! This one had a wingspan of about 28 inches and was about 18 inches tall as best I could tell. I was zoomed way out and had no tripod so was hard to keep the camera still and this feller was fidgeting quite a bit.

Of course the lazy mutt is enjoying the porch already.
