hmmmm...guess it depends on which list you are looking at. LOL! I always hear, even on their TV commercials that Johnson City Hospital is one of the top 100 heart hospitals in the country. So when they weren't on this list JMT posted, I did some looking to see if they lost their ranking or something. Some very interesting lists I found, all claiming to be "the top 100 hospital" lists. All very different.
This one doesn't have a single TN hospital on it:
Solucient 100 Top Hospitals
This is a list of top 100 Children's hospitals and has both Memphis and Nashville on it.
Best Hospitals 2007 Specialty Search: Pediatrics
This list is top 50 cancer hospitals that has Vandi on it.
Best Hospitals 2007 Specialty Search: Cancer
This one is for intensive care, has 4 from TN including Bristol TN!
USATODAY.com - Top 100 hospitals for intensive care performance
In this one by Health Grades, Chatt was the only TN on the top 50 list. (they don't have a 100 list)
HealthGrades - Information on Hospitals, Doctors and Nursing Homes ™
Gosh, it is hard, even looking at the "stats" to know what to believe.

There are lots of lists out there and lots of hospitals that are deserving. Also, hospitals have to apply for these awards and not all top hospitals apply. Still, to achieve one of these awards is fabulous! Congrats to all!

I've been to St. Mary's and Fort Sanders in Knoxville and they are the best hospitals I have ever been to. That means they make my top list, and that's all that matters!

It is my understanding that HealthGrades charges hospitals to be on the list. That would definitely push some from competing for the ratings.

Gesh, wouldn't it be nice to see a list based on real numbers for a change? How about not paying for a ranking but doing a great job and someone judging on that and not the amount of money you stuff in their pockets. Is politics EVERYWHERE? Never mind, don't answer, I already know the answer.

Since some hospitals stress certain aspects of health care and some hospitals are general care, i would put little wieght behind these lists. Some hospitals are cardiac centers. Some are cancer centers. Some are trauma centers. And so on.

This looks like a very helpful website that doesn't look for a fee for their reports.
