Fire/Ems Jobs?
Hi all,
Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.
Well, my family and I are ready to leave Florida within the next 3 years. I am currently a firefighter/paramedic. I will be looking for the same career in TN, NC, SC. Not really sure what state we will end up in, need to keep looking and see where I can find a job at. Looking for at least 5 acres(useable acres)not a cliff on the backyard. I have a 2y/o son and thinking about a second one right now, so schools are going to be a big decision. Love the outdoors and to have seasons again, love the slower pace. We can't wait. Thanks in advance to anyone that has any info for us.
Steve

Hi Fireman649, please give us more information about what you are looking for, that description fits many, many areas in TN. Also, read through the threads and posts here, that might give you a good idea about lots of TN towns/cities.
Hope that helps, Merry Christmas!

There are lots of those, here are some good schools that seem very popular with folks on these boards that have done a lot of research on schools.
Oak Ridge, some of the best in the country here, but some folks are worried about the Nuke plant there, so it seems to be a toss up.
Maryville, great town that is growing and is just south of Knoxville, and easy access to the Knoxville airport ( which is really a military base that shares runway with public commuter flights)
Greeneville City Schools. Little East TN town that is kinda out of the way but close enough to the Tri-Cities for easy drive to "city life"
Washington County schools, Great location being close to 3 larger cities for employment and close to the mountains without being in them, convenient drive to VA, NC, KY. (this is where my children go and we LOVE it!)
Sevier County Schools. Very well funded by the city and Ms. Dolly Parton. Great reading and music programs. However, this area is a hub of tourist activity and traffic can be a real issue.
I know I missed a few in Middle and West TN, but I really don't know much about those, can someone else chime in here with those please?

On its Tennessee page, Firehouse.com (Firehouse network link, then Tennessee) has links to the TN Firemens Association, the State Fire Marshall's office, TN Fire Chiefs Association and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. There is also a link to a Tennessee firefighter forum but I didn't check it out.
The firefighter test will be given in Oak Ridge (adjacent to Knoxville) soon. Go to this page:
http://www.cortn.org/Per-html/emp-op.htm (broken link)
and scroll down past the first IT job to the heading that says:
ELIGIBILITY TESTING FOR FIRE FIGHTER/ENGINEER
Applications Due: Friday, January 5, 2007
Written Test: Thursday, February 15, 2007 (no exceptions)
Individuals who desire to participate in the selection process for Fire Fighter Engineer/ must contact the Personnel Department by 12:00 noon, Friday, January 5, 2007.
Hiring preference will be given to applicants who currently possess an EMT or Paramedic certification.
It also says this:
It is hoped that individuals hired for this position will reside in Oak Ridge so that they may participate, when eligible, in the Fire Specialist program. If you want info about living in Oak Ridge, there is another thread in this forum on that right now and I can direct you to some photos.
The salary is posted as well as minimum qualifications.

Rural Metro
We considered Knox County especially west Knoxville and Farragut for the schools until we found out that the county does not provide its citizens with fire protection. Apparently everyone who lives outside the Knoxville city limits must subscribe to Rural Metro for fire protection or go without. We are looking in Blount County now.

This is true. I do not subscribe and live in Knox County. They will respond but then you will get a big bill. Me, I'm vigilant about keeping open flames away from the curtains!

Are you looking at working in a large dept.,smaller,or does it matter?
Also do you want to ride the engine as a Paramedic or ambulance or both? Does it matter? Most of the EMS systems outside of Nashville,Memphis,Bristol & Knox County are not fire based.I know Knoxville city is covered by Rural Metro Ambulance, and runs some ALS engines with them. Then other areas in Knox Co. are covered by R.M. Fire & EMS.Don't know if they have 2 different divisions or swap back & forth from suppression to EMS.PM me before you apply to Rural Metro!... Oak Ridge does have a good reputation, though.
I am a Firefighter/Paramedic for the city of Cookeville F.D.,which is half-way between Knoxville & Nashville. We run ALS engines with a 3rd service county run EMS.Been a TN EMTP for 13 years.
There are many jobs to be had, just start applying.Course firefighting jobs are harder to come by so you may have to work in EMS or something else for a while.
Send me a PM if you want.I don't know about ALL dept's but can help you out with SOME...

In the nashville area there are alot of career departments getting ready to hire. I know clarksville just got a grant to hire 15. Springfield is hiring 6. Gallatin just hired 7 and will be hiring more. Hendersonville just hired 17 and will probally be hiring more. Also look at murfreesboro, Franklin, Smyrna, and some of the other cities around Nashville.
