Just found that one. There were 4 capitals Knoxville, Kingsport, Murfreesboro and Nashville.

Which one had the shortest reign as capital?

It was Kingston, and it was one day.

[From 1784 to 1790] the current 12 most eastern counties in the state were known as what?

Those are 2007 estimates. Both metro areas comprise a multitude of counties, and both have added counties since the 2000 census.
Only that "metro area" can mean at least two difference things. Metro can mean just a large city (a metropolis), or the city and surrounding areas (the metro statistical area). So someone could take the question either way. If someone had said Memphis-Shelby County was the largest (compared to Metro Nashville itself), I think I would have counted their answer as being correct, as well as yours since you were thinking of the metro statistical area.

Memphis and Shelby County have not fused to become one metropolitan government. The only other metropolitan form of government in Tennessee besides Nashville/Davidson County is Lynchburg/Moore County. So Nashville would still be the correct answer to the question of what is the largest metropolitan area in Tennessee.

Now, a related question:

What county in Tennessee is both the largest in population and area?

That would be Sequoyah.

What lake in West Tennessee was created when the Mississippi River ran backwards because of a huge earthquake in Missouri in the 1800s?

My point was that "metro" (metropolis) can just mean "major city" (Webster's II). If I compare Nashville to Memphis, I believe Memphis is still the larger city (according to the last populations figures I saw); so I still think either answer would be correct, at least for a trivia type game.
