Default Relocate to Eastern TN

I live in the Midwest (Chicago and suburbs) but have always wanted to move to a warmer climate. I have a great job opportunity in Eastern TN with my company, but know nothing about the area.

I have two children, daughter will be a senior in HS next year and my son will be a sophomore so the school district is important.

We have always had a SF home, but would consider an upper scale townhome community since our kids will be going to college in a few short years.

My husband and I enjoy being out and about so cultural/social opportunities are a must.

Any suggestions where I should look?

Eastern Tennessee covers a pretty broad territory. Do you mean Knoxville? Chattanooga? The Tri Cities? Let us know where in Eastern Tennessee your job is located and we'll be glad to give you some suggestions.

Wow, as the mother of a rising high school senior I wonder if you can wait to make the move until your children are out of high school? To uproot a rising senior would not be an elective choice I would make.

Like JMT said, if you can be more specific we can try to help.

Its a territorial job covering the eastern portion of TN so I am free to locate anywhere I choose within that area. (Cookeville, Oak Ridge, Chattanooga to the state boarder)

Wow, thank you for your concern and curiosity about my daughter.

So you can rest easy, my daughter and son were consulted about the possiblity of our move and they are both excited about meeting new people and making new friends. We live in a very small town with a small HS population. Also, my daughter has been looking and visited a few colleges in TN.

Thank you for your reply.

I was regretting my decision to ask for help on this forum. The response of "To uproot a rising senior would not be an elective choice I would make" was very judgemental and not at all kind. I did not think to write a novel on our family discussions and the decision making process our unit went through to begin to explore this possilbe move. I only meant to ask for assistance in finding a good neighborhood with good high schools.

Your clarification and experience on this forum are noted and appreciated. Thanks again.

In that case, you might want to check out West Knox, particularly the areas around Concord. There are lovely homes right on the lake as well as very nice neighborhoods with shared lake access. Your kids might enjoy being on the water (you might, too). Plus, West Knox will provide easy access to I-75 to take you down to Chattanooga and I-40 to take you west to Cookeville.

The high school for that area is Farragut which seems to be popular with Northern transplants.

If you want a bit more urban experience, you might enjoy the Sequoyah Hills neighborhood in Knoxville. It's just a few miles west of the university and downtown, so the neighborhood is full of college professors as well as bankers and lawyers who work downtown. It's an older, heavily wooded neighborhood with full-grown trees, jogging paths and large parks along the waterfront. Housing in Sequoyah Hills runs the gamut from large plantation style homes to craftsman bungalows to townhouses. The high school for that area is West High which because of the university influence has a solid curriculum.

I doubt that you're going to return to the forum to read our posts, but I can assure that I know the poster well enough to say that she didn't intend to be judgmental or unkind, but rather to engage you in conversation and to make sure that you were thinking through this move. Frankly, I would be honoured that a complete stranger thought enough of me and my daughter to be concerned.
