cookie cutter developments-
Just curious- who is moving here and searching for something like where they came from, or who wants something more rural.

Well, I'm already here, but I'm renting.
I come from the land of Mickey, where everything is plastic. I love those gated-communities that they've set up in Florida. They advertise them as "small-town" America. Hilarious.
I like living near Knoxville. It's a small city that is ten minutes from rural life.
But it's REAL life.
Not some developers marketing ploy.
I like living in the middle of a diverse group of people. I've found strict zoning regulations end up encouraging cookie-cutter houses and driving out the real people.
We can't decide whether we want a small farmhouse-type house in the middle of the country, or to move into the middle of the inner city and buy a fixer-upper.
Either way, I want a really old house.
That's another reason I'm glad I left Florida. Most really old houses are gone.

true! I agree. It is nice to have a private backyard and woods- you cannot have that in Fl (maybe in the northern part). In our case we moved here to get away from a rat race of Lexus SUV's and HOA fees over 200.00 per month (for what, other than Nazi-like fines if you have the wrong color mailbox). It is a relief to see areas like this still exist. Good luck with your house, I am sure you will find something with a nice yard for your children!

I understand completely! When I first moved to Knoxville I lived in an old farmhouse, and as much as I enjoyed it, having to drive everywhere got a little old. So I bought an old 1940s house in the middle of the city and LOVE it. Knoxville has very little crime compared to other big cities, and I love love love being only 3 minutes away from any number of grocery stores (including an organic food co-op), the post office, the bank, the hospital, and only 7 minutes from work instead of 30. Plus, I like living in a neighborhood where we're all of different colors and backgrounds--white, black, Hispanic, Asian--which doesn't seem to exist out in the country.

I want open spaces. Not that I want that much property to take care of, but I like a yard with garden space, and I have pets.
I want a nice place to finish raising my children. The area were I live now is becoming over populated. When I was growning up, there was large garden spaces, feilds and pastures between us and the neighbors, there are no garden spaces around here anymore.

SunnyHelena,
You make it sound like wanting to own a house of less than a couple of acres a bad thing.
I would like a nice ranch house, 2000-1800 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, great room, fireplace, 3 car attached garage. As maintenance free as possible. Close to shopping and resturants but not in the middle of the city.
It is just my wife and I except for the 3 month my son is not in college. We are in our late 40's. The last thing I want to do is spend most of my free time taking care of a large property. I would also like to use the money saved on the smaller house/lot and use it to improve the quality of life. Golf club memberships, new boat, vacation, etc...

Brax:
You've just described Florida!
Actually, I think Sunny said a lot of one-half acre.
