activities for kids
My husband is currently interviewing for a posittion in Cookeville. If things work out, we will be moving there over the summer. I have read this forum and looked at real estate sites, and so far, I am pleased with what I have seen and read. I am having trouble finding information on activities for kids. I find yellow page listings for many things, but not a lot of web sites. I have three kids (ages 5, 7, and 9) and they are into dance, theater, swimming, and horseback riding. Can anyone direct me to information on those activities. Thank you!!

There's all of that and more for kids to do in Cookeville. It's a wonderful community.
Cookeville Children's Theatre:

There are several dance studios listed in the Cookeville phone directory.
There are several public pools in town, and the YMCA offers lessons and activities for kids and adults:
Welcome to the Putnam County Family YMCA | YMCA of Middle Tennessee
I know that in the past the university has also offered swimming classes for kids during the summers, but I don't know if they still do that. Or maybe it was only for children of university employees, I'm not sure.
For horseback riding, there's the Circle K Horse Pavilion (that's also their web address, minus the blanks). They offer lessons, camps, boarding, and breeding services.
Good luck! I love Cookeville, and I hope you and your family will be able to move there and will enjoy it as much as I do.

Yes, they have the Cookeville Children's Theater. If you aren't afraid of a 30 mile drive, in Crossville they have the Cumberland County Playhouse. One of the top Regional Theaters in the country. The dancing, acting, and singing classes they offer are very inexpensive and are taught by a variety of seasoned theater professionals. Dancers will star in 1 or 2 professionally produced shows per season; and throughout the year, students may audition for and act in productions alongside real Broadway stars.
Victory Gymnastics in Cookeville is a great gym. They offer all levels of tumbling and gymnastics as well as the best karate program (Johnny Loftis) we have seen yet. They do afterschool programs, open gym on the weekends, summer camps, and next year they will have even more activities on the calendar.
The Y is supposed to be pretty active, but I have no experience with it.
Scouts go through spurts. Sometimes there area lot of activities, and other times not so many.
If by any chance you homeschool, there are some very active homeschool groups in the area. Two of the main ones are UCACHS and Homeschool Passport. Between these two groups, you'll have so many fun and affordable activities your head will spin.
The library has a lot of activities as well. Story times hosted by a very gifted storyteller and lots of festivals and good programs.
The Cookeville Children's Museum is now open. It is really good for the little ones but not as good for the bigger ones. It is a very small place, and only open limited hours, but if you get a membership to it or any other ACM affiliated children's museum, it can be a fun thing for your younger kid/s.
There is also an awesome to store downtown. I never remember the name of it, but the man who runs it really knows his stuff. For unique toys and games, be sure to look him up.
I don't know much about swimming and horses, but I am sure they are there. Jamestown is about an hour northeast of Cookeville and they have a heavily equestrian based community. They have tons of opportunities for pack trips and horse riding around the plateau and into the Big South Fork park. Pickett Park is also there with lots of great free programs over the summer like canoeing and hiking...
Enjoy...
