Oh, no. There are actually people that will move here! Hengy Mama will, because she is a nurse. Gemkeeper will because she is retired.
But there are a lot of people that ask really specific questions like about specific houses that are for sale now. You drive by the houses, send them examples of other houses that they might like, and then you find out that they are probably not going to move for another year because they can't sell their house, find a job, etc.
I understand the desperation to move. Sometimes, you just have to go. Three years ago, my husband's company closed down and the place that we rented was put up for sale. We were looking at a minimum of $1,000 to rent in Fort Myers, Florida. Instead, we got a rental here for $485.
But times have changed. The rentals cost a lot more now, and the rentals there have really come down in price.
City-data wasn't around when we moved. We spent a lot of time researching on the internet for specific things like cost of living, jobs, housing. Internet newspapers are fantastic!
I think this forum is outstanding for: "How do you like living in Knoxville?" "Is Holston Hills a good neighborhood?" "Do you like the schools in Oak Ridge?" Those are things that you can't get from a newspaper.
"How far is Oak Ridge from Knoxville?" is better answered by the poster actually going to mapquest and checking it out. It will give them a good sense of the layout of the land.
But, my responses in this thread are not about silly questions. They are an observation on empty houses that are now up for sale and why.

If you can, instead of giving them the answer, tell them how to do the research because if you don't, and they don't like Town X, they will then know how to do the research for towns A, B and C that they consider, next. I really don't believe people are lazy about it. I really believe they don't know how to use a search engine to find information and photos.
You know, there are a lot of retirees on the move who resisted getting on a computer for a long time. Some didn't use one in a job and all were too old to learn to use one in school (meaning computers arrived on the scene long after they graduated). Some only know e-mail and how to click on a link. I have one friend who has never used a computer and another one who only uses one for e-mail and spreadsheets. If they stumbled onto City Data and they were moving, they wouldn't know how to do research. But, a lot of these older folks are the ones that are moving.
Also, for example, if you ask people to tell you how they would find out if the ABC Department Store and the XYZ Home Improvement Store was in their town, they would probably tell you they'd look in the Yellow Pages but these same people would never think to look for an online yellow pages for the same information. So, you have to tell them how to do it and then the next time, they'll do it on their own.
In my opinion, the value of this forum is sharing your experience with things/places and telling people how to do particular research to find what they need.

Sorry, but if they're smart enough to figure out how to register at city-data.com and post messages here, they're smart enough to find out on their own how far Oak Ridge is from Farragut, or if there are any Meijer stores in Sevierville, or how much houses in Seymour are going for, or if hospitals are hiring, and so on and so forth.
I agree with hiknapster, I love helping people with questions such as "How do you like living in Knoxville?" or "What are some things we should do when we're in town next week?" or even "What neighborhoods in Knoxville do you feel are the safest?" But I shake my head in disbelief every time I see someone ask us to find them a job or to ask for information that is readily available on any Rand McNally road atlas.

robbied: Don't you just love how we turned your thread into our own personal "whines"?
Something will happen for you, eventually. The whole country, to a certain extent, is paralyzed in this recession. Argue that we are not in one, but these gas prices, alone, are wreaking havoc on everything.

Am I being too sensitive...because I surely wasnt asking anyone to find us a job when I started this thread. I was simply stating we realize that we will most likely not be able to get there until after my husband is at least retired unless he does consulting etc.
We are VERY realistic. Sometimes it is just frustrating because I love the area so much and wish we could move there now.
Maybe you were just making a statement , LauraC , and perhaps I am taking it personally ?

I know that when the time is right, it will happen. I just hope people didnt feel that I was asking anyone to find a job. Sometimes , as I know in the medical field, there are jobs available or changes being made that are not reflected simply in posted hospital employment pages.
There are many jobs that are circulating which are not posted , at least in our area here, and it does help to ask what the situation is like from someone who actually lives there.
But people who are not in the medical field would not know that.
