When visiting Norris Lake you may want to consider getting a boat and a good fishfinder. [mod] advertising not allowed [/mod]

I don't know that there are many jobs in the area, unless you work for TVA. One could commute to Knoxville, but it's a pretty long drive. Norris is lovely. The lake is nice, there are several excellent state parks in the area (Norris Dam, Big Ridge, and Cove Lake). The small town of Norris is charming. If you do a post or thread search for Norris, you kind find my post and others describing the area in greater detail. Also, because Norris is close to Knoxville, you may have more replies if you re-post in this thread. I would live in Norris - it's a great place!

Norris Lake is good sized. There are a lot of retirees up there, and quite a bit of expensive housing. Because of the local topography, there is a huge difference in the commutability of the various residential areas near the lake. Some are completely impractical, while others are a moderately long drive. Most people up there who do commute drive into Knoxville. Some go to Oak Ridge, and some to Clinton.

As was mentioned, there are virtually no jobs in the immediate area, except for minimum wage. There is some light manufacturing in the Clinton area, which is nearby. Other than that, good paying jobs mean commuting to Knoxville or Oak Ridge.

The lake gets drawn down quite a bit in the winter for flood storage purposes. It is a TVA reservoir. IIRC, it was the first one they built. The dam is on the Clinch River.

Search for weather data on Knoxvillle, then figure it will be slightly cooler at Norris. Some of the communities up there get snow, when Knoxville doesn't.

I work with a gal that lives on Norris. It is a long haul for her to come to Knoxville to work everyday. She frequently complains about the drive but loves living out there enough to stay.

If you have to drive on 441, it will be daunting when there is ice on the road.

If 441 is iced up, it will be daunting just getting to it from some of the areas up there.

Default Norris Lake or other TN Lakes

Hello All,
I just came across this forum and joined so pardon me if I sound a bit "new" as opposed to "ignorant". I live in Virginia and my husband and I are retiring soon and want to move a bit south where it's warmer on the lake. We will be heading to GA, SC, NC & TN in a couple weeks to check out various lakes. Last year we visited Norris Lake and it was lovely, of course all the lakes were down considerably at that time. My question to all of you - if you were to move to a lake which lake would it be? We are open for suggestions. We do not play golf so we don't need that, we are looking for a place where we will be within 45 min of an airport, hospital, shopping, dinner, etc. We want year round water as we boat. We have a chocolate lab so we need a bit of privacy, well ???? I'm open for anyone's input. Clean water, civilization, no/low crime, nice weather. thanks - Judy at Virginia Tech - Blacksburg, VA
Go Hokies!!!

If you need to be near an airport with a lot of direct flights, East Tennessee is not the place to be. You can look at the website for McGhee-Tyson (in Alcoa but they call it Knoxville) and compare it to Nashville on amount of flights, amount of direct flights and cost to places you travel to the most..
