It only takes about 25 minutes to get from Fayetteville to Huntsville. A large portion of the people I know in Lincoln County work in Huntsville, and do a lot of their shopping and dining there too. They (like me) just don't want to LIVE there. Lincoln County offers the best of both worlds; you can have all the amenities of a large town nearby, but don't have to immerse yourself in the constant rat race and the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality that is a part of life in Huntsville/Madison.

Default Insular society

The first is the old, insular community, many, like you say, are related to one another; they are suspicious of outsiders and keep to themselves for the most part. The second is the new, cosmopolitan community; many, if not most, of those people are high-tech and work in Huntsville. They are from many foreign countries and just about every state you can imagine. The existence of that group makes it a lot easier for people who love Lincoln County but didn't grow up there. They can work in Huntsville but enjoy all the benefits of a Tennessee lifestyle.
Amen....when I first posted that I considered Fayetteville to be an 'insular community', there were numerous obscene and threatening responses from the local 'gentry', all of which have since been removed by city-data. I guess if you live on a 20+ acre farm, work & shop in Huntsville, and socialize with your family and old friends, you'd be insulated from the low brow locals. It is definitely not a place that welcomes strangers and transplants - people usually move out of Fayetteville, not into it - the population is declining. And you don't have to be rude to not get served in Cahoots....just an outsider without a country accent !!!

It's true that Fayetteville's pop is declining, slightly, but the county's total population is growing. Of course, the growth is chiefly on the south side of the county nearest Huntsville.

So maybe a family from New Hampshire who lived in Colorado for several years who is now from Hawaii and thinking of a Fayetteville farm ( and who has a child adopted from China) should go somewhere else? There are people in any town who like the status quo and there are those who are welcoming. I think if you are nice and respectful, most anyone will respond in kind.

...and as someone who has had ties in Fayetteville for 30 years, you are dead on right. There are knuckleheads and good folks every where.
I think you'll be fine in Fayetteville. Just remember that this area's rural farm roots aren't far removed (it used to be chiefly agricultural...the biggest beef producer in the state but is rapidly becoming primarily a bedroom community to Huntsville) and that it is mostly politically and socially conservative with God, family and church being important to a lot of folks. But, as with all places, there are all kinds here.
As an earlier poster said, there are people from all over the world here.

...and by the way, Cahoots doesn't refuse service to "yankees" or those without "country" accents as boyfromnewyorkcity has posted more than once. If it were so, I think I would have noticed when I was there. I actually got served and treated just fine!
