Default mountainous region?

Where does the mountainous area start in eastern tn? am looking at moving to eastern tn or west va and am trying to figure out where i need to look at. i have been to mountain city, over to bristol and all around knoxville, i like marysville but i was wondering whats it like farther northeast ? a map would be helpful to show me where the mountainous rugged area starts.

Default Google's terrain maps are very useful...

Starting with this one centered on Maryville, you can click and drag the map around to see East TN's most mountainous regions and zoom in or out on areas of particular interest. If you click on the small grayish triangle to the left of the map, it'll fill the width of your screen.

Blount, Sevier, Cocke, Greene, Unicoi, Carter and Johnson counties contain the most rugged of terrain in NETN. East of Maryville, Newport, Erwin, Elizabethton, Greeneville's west side and also the southern part of the county, Mountain City & related communities - Butler, Hampton, Roan Mountain - will all get you pretty darn close.

Yes, Elizabethton is a larger town with some higher mountains east of town. On the west side of I-81 near the VA border, its a "valley" area... the same region that runs from Chattanooga to Knoxville, up through Tri-Cities. You have to head northwest of there into rural SW VA (heading toward KY) to get to higher terrain and there are some high mountains up there.

The highest mountains in TN are on the TN-NC border.

Here are some maps that might help....

Take a trip across the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville NC and you will see some pretty decent mountains in that area. There area some close to 6000 feet up there. If you travel from Ducktown/Copperhill up HWY 68 to Hwy 411 and then north on 411 to KY/VA you will be following along the foot of the Appalachians in this area. Tellico/Coker Creek/Farner/Turtletown/Ball Play/Vonore/etc. offers a few decent mountain towns.

Hmm... Mountain City seems dead? Well, it's a mountain town. I thought that's what you wanted! If you're looking for nightlife in the mountains, head to Asheville, boy.

Sorry, it's just an expression used around these parts. Nothing intentionally offensive intended.

(Rather, if I were attempting it, you'd know. )
