Default Cumberland Gap

I had some time to kill today so I took a little day trip up to Cumberland Gap. It's an old little town located where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia meet. It's very historic and absolutely beautiful! So I took a few pictures and thought I'd share them with everyone.

First up, the road to Cumberland Gap. This is Highway 63 between La Follette and Cumberland Gap:

Default Lincoln Memorial University

And what the heck, here are some pictures of Lincoln Memorial University which is a few hundred feet from Cumberland Gap in Harrogate, Tennessee. I would venture to guess that most Tennesseans have probably never heard of LMU. But holy cow is it in a beautiful setting or what? It also has a brand new medical school specializing in (as you can imagine) rural health care in Appalachia.

I'll say it is a beautiful spot, JMT. There must be many hidden treasure spots in TN. Thanks for sharing this one with us.

I do believe LMU is trying to start a law school in downtown Knoxville. I've heard that their new medical school is wildly popular and has caused somewhat of a mini housing boom all over Claiborne County, so I'm sure if they do start a law school they'll do a great job at it. Not that we need more lawyers.

But isn't that campus just beautiful? I think next to Sewanee it's probably the most beautiful college campus in Tennessee.

Well JMT, I can't give you any rep until I spread it around, but small town USA is alive and looking well. Thanks so much for sharing those pictures. It just relaxes you to look at them. Wish I was there.

Great pics! I'm going there in October on a class photography trip. We'll be hitting Cumberland Mountain National Historic Park, Pine Mountain State Park in Kentucky and Wilderness Road State Park in Virginia. It's some kind of bicentennial event weekend so there will be all kinds of living history activities.

CD wouldn't let me give you more reps.

I agree. It's refreshing to go to places like La Follette and Cumberland Gap and see that small-town Tennessee is still alive and well. And beautiful, too!

One of the things I like about Cumberland Gap is that it hasn't been ruined by touristy crap. Notice how few cars were on the streets in my pics. We probably could've had a soccer game going on the streets and never been bothered. I've heard that 50 years ago Gatlinburg was a lot like Cumberland Gap. Hard to believe.

Hey LauraC, you are our resident professional photographer, so I can't wait to see the pics you're going to take when you head up to Cumberland Gap! I bet in October it should be really beautiful.

JMT,
Thanks for making my desk chair travelling so much fun! I enjoyed the pics. I still have to spread it around before I can rep you again. But you know the thought is there.
