I think you have to also dress as JMT suggests to be considered truly "EMO"...

But JMT suggested looks for guys....anyway it doesn't really matter. I am middle age and have dragged enough looks with me from previous decades. I'll just stay being me as I am in Tennessee today.

Pam in this context I'd say emo would be a musical style.
Think...maybe some that people our age have heard...Sum41, Blink 182, those kind of guys USED to be considered emo. Of course, newer emo that we're not familiar with might be Dashboard Confessional, Hawthorne Heights, or My Chemical Romance. It's like angst-ridden music (think grunge...but more melodic). Guys with long bangs parted on the side wearing turtlenecks and ugly plaid pants... You can also describe someone as "being emo" (but not AN emo) because they're over-dramatic and "woe is me" types. I'd be willing to guess that Knoxville would have a pretty decent alternative music scene...but don't know for sure. I remember 30 Seconds to Mars playing there back when they used to be just "Jared Leto's Band", around 2004, I think. |

Karen,
Blink 182 is the only groups music I know. This thread has made me realize I am getting old and fuddy duddy. I thought I was saved when not so long ago I really liked Green Day. It is tough when my eras music is now considered "classic" and mangled by Muzak in elevators or when I'm on hold. ![]() Whew! I feel better it isn't a look but music. I know, I can't believe it when they announce how old Mick Jaggar or even Eddie Van Halen is now... at least they are merciful on the radio and call it classic rock rather than "oldies"...

Goth in the 21st century basically...........
Although they tend to like bands such as: The White Stripes, Stereophonics, BabyShambles, .... Keep Smiling............. |

It's not like Goth at all actually. The modern Emo thing is a totally manufactured subculture. It's a marketing strategy to sell records and clothes to teens. The original Emo movement of the 80's was totally different and was part of the old school punk subculture. Old Emo has nothing to do with the kids running around looking like fashion disasters who call themselves Emo now.

I think I may have to point something out here.................
Teenagers (young, dumb and full of it) will always listen to music and dress as a specific fashion and or scene dictates......... Soces & Greasers Hippies & Yuppies Rockers & Punks Goth & New Wave etc etc etc............ I think we'll just leave Disco out of this one for now........... I myself love all types of music - apart from Current Country, RAP, House and Speed Metal - Just not my scene. I've been known to frequent shows such as: Neil Diamond, ... but prefer the smaller venues that cater to the likes of Southern Culture on the Skids and local bands maybe looking for that lucky break or who just like to play for the heck of it. I dress like A second hand store Bettie Page and I"m quite happy to say I'm 38 and still enjoy a scene of sorts. Just the other day my sister put on an Aeropostale t shirt - and seemed rather pleased about it? So I asked the question.... "what is that all about then? Is it like Ambercrombie & Fitch?" Her reply: Well kinda - only more expensive? WTF??? She and I are like chalk and cheese, but we like to go out and have a good laugh at a show. Been in The DownTown a few times now - great place!!! If you're 21. We grew up in Albuquerque, NM and luckily there was a venue where we could go and just be 16-18 - young, dumb and full of it. It was called The Big Apple and - we got up to some silly stuff, but I think had we not had that outlet - things could have turned out differently for both of us. I'm looking to run a business, yes - but at the same time embrace an important part of growing up for most Teens! Sweeping it under the carpet and pretending it isn't there is only going to cause a huge explosion - The Pressure Cooker Syndrome. I've already gleaned from this thread that - no one under the age of thirty is going to post in the City-Data forum. Thanks for the input - The more I ask, the more I know. The less I talk, the more I Learn. Keep smiling~ Hopie |
