School services for legally blind 2nd grader Murfreesboro??
Hi!
I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with services for visually impaired children in Murfreesboro's schools. If there is anyone out there that has a VI child, Braille reader, cane user, any input would be appreciated!! If there is anyone with a VI child in any other school system in Tenn, any information would be helpful!! Our daughter is going into 2nd grade. We are looking to see if the services are good or not. We are looking for anywhere in Tenn, but Murfreesboro just caught our eye.
Thanks!!

I have not heard any comments in the past on this but I hope someone sees this post and chimes in. I would imagine that your best bet is to call the school district and speak with them. Welcome to the forum and keep us posted on your move.

Thanks Smokymtngal!! I have to start doing some research. Where we are isn't the ideal situation and it is so hard to find teachers of the visually impaired, so we have to do mega-research when it comes to schools!!
Thanks!

I have a blind child who will be starting high school next year but we're not in TN yet. She'll be starting high school in NH then we'll move to TN when we don't have to worry about schools. Your best bet is to contact the school system in the town your interested in specifically the ESE director and see what and if they have visually impaired kids in school already and if not maybe they would know of some other school districts that do. The schools ARE required to provide any and all necessary equipment, aids including teachers etc but like you said, it's hard to find a teacher of the visually impaired and they have no control over that aspect. All they can do is put a job opening out there and hope some visually impaired teacher wants to move there. They had a hard time finding one in NH for her but they did after searching for 4 or 5 months. Keep in mind, they need PLENTY of time to prepare for visually impaired kids to enter school. My daughter is totally blind so ordering braille books can take quite a long time. Good luck and i hope you find something good for her.

Contact Tennessee School for the Blind in Nashville.
TENNESSEE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND
They offer education as well as coordinate/direct those services throughout the state.
It has an excellent reputation and a lot of local backing. I've got a friend who was involved with Friends of the school.

The Tennessee school for the blind is excellent. I am training to be a TVI and one of my teachers used to work there. I have heard nothing but good things from her and many others. The school distric is required to provide services to your child but that can be difficult and quite a battle if there is no TVI or good ESE director in the area.
Good luck with your search!
