Tennessee cities
We are looking to move to TN but have not decided on which city to move by. We are looking for a small town, but with all the hubs and shopping close by. Tractor Supply, JCPennys, Sears, a mall of type, a varity of dinner places to eat. LOW crime, good schools,. We will live out of town 100 plus ac to small farm, but do not want to drive by run down areas to get anywhere.
PLEASE HELP................. Some of some interest so far but have only drove through are Crossville, Maryville, Lebanon.......

Start by checking city-data's TN towns page and narrow your choices down. There are so many great towns and cities to choose from! Come back here and let us know which ones you like so we can add more info. Good Luck!

Hendersonville and Gallatin both in Sumner County.
Mt. Juliet is also a great place in Wilson County.

The Tri-Cities area in Northeast TN might fit your requirements. They consist of Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol and their surrounding communities. The area is mountainous and beautiful with good shopping and lots of friendly people. The only thing we're missing is an international airport.

Sounds like Cookeville is the place you want to be! We have the small town feel and have the shopping you desire...we also have TSC, JC Penney, Sears, plenty (as in 100+) restaurants, low crime and good schools...don't know what your definition of runned down is, but you'll find some junky places everywhere you go....
Our university sets us apart from Crossville and we're farther away from the big cities than Maryville (near Knoxville) and Lebanon (near Nashville)...I consider THAT a benefit, although some may disagree...

I forgot to mention the colleges in the the Johnson City area; we have East TN State University, Milligan College, Northeast State CC, Kings College (Bristol), and Tusculum College (Greeneville).

I think, when you say "Tennessee cities" people think of Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis so if it's small towns you want information about, your thread title should reflect that otherwise the small town people you want to answer won't even open up the thread to read it.
