I love having our chickens and they honestly require little care. Throw out some food, make sure they have plenty of water and enjoy the eggs. When they hatch out I save a certian amount of roosters for meat, get rid of the rest as soon as I can, save all the hens. The eggs I get are enough for us and the family, plus I sell the extra and it pays for the food for them. Pretty good investment if you like eggs.

Lisa, I am sure glad you post so much, so many times
My Cousin wants me to come down to Tennessee, (he lives only 15 minutes from Graceland), and I am not the 'traveling kind' anymore.
Been to enough places to satisfy me on the notion of staying home.
Wife? Well, she is a different matter and wants to go, and I keep telling her, "Don't let me stop you" LOL!
As long as you keep posting, and I keep seeing the scenery, I will get my fill of Tennessee that way... Sure beats a 12 hour drive down there, from here!
Hope you and Mike get an early Spring, and look forawrd to seeing more.
May the LORD Bless each of you.
I wish you well...
Jesse

Just keep in mind that Graceland is probably at least a 6 hour drive from where Lisa lives....and you won't find that kind of scenery around Memphis...

I think chickens would be great, and if you have a rooster and a broody hen or two, you get all sorts of chicks without much work on your part. We had sex-linked chickens, where the boys and girls were different colors at hatching so it would easy to see who would be producing breakfast and who would be producing dinner. Only thing was, we were too squeamish to deal with the dinner ones, so they all got to stay.

For meat and eggs I have to say I love my Rhode Island Reds and Cuckoo Marans. Both have good temperments and will keep you busy with the eggs. Both brood well and I have tried about 8 different breeds and always come back to these two. Stay away from the turnkins....dear goodness they have attitude!

Thank you for all the "eggcitng" ideas and tips. Maybe when we stop all the landscaping and construction we will get some chickens. I might be back to ask questions.
Thanks

Thanks Joe for the info!
Actually, I live right across from West Virginia and if I wanted to see some beautiful hills, all I have to do is go there to see my Wife's relatives, as all of them live out in the 'boonies'...(That's what we 'city boys' call those in the Country LOL!).
I tried to find Lisa and Mikes place via Google Earth, (no, I am not a stalker, I was just curious as to how far into the mountains they really are), and wouldnt ya just know it, that section, Johnson County is covered by a lot of clouds so I couldnt locate them.
Seeing how they live on top of a hill, (or is it a mountain...not quite sure when a hill stops and a mountain begins), I can see how they get a lot of wind. I had a chance to buy a house on a hilltop, until I found out how much wind there was, and decided that I liked it better in the valley, so, I am only two good stone throws from the Ohio Rive, right across from West Virginia where I went and got my barefoot wife and have been happily married for 30 years now
I really have no desire to go visit Memphis, as I cant drive long distances (heart condition), and we just wait til the relatives come to visit us, instead of us visiting them...Though, I am going to try to locate my cousin via Google Earth around Memphis and see just where he is...if the clouds arent in the way...I havent used that part of Google where it lets you got a look around the neighborhood, as it seems too voyeristic for my taste!
Its 60+ degrees outside, so, time for me to grab the cane and waddle out to the swing to enjoy the sunshine on my face and wind in the trees LOL!
Enjoy the day, Lisa and Mike, and the rest of you...
May the LORD Bless each of you.
I wish you well...
Jesse
