i am a single mother 31 years old looking to move to a quite safe southern town.

Okay so my question is Where is a nice town not to small but not big, Preferably in upper tennessee near kentucky to raise children.
The area also has to be tollerent of other races as my children are mixed race. (Black & White)
I have been trying to get informantion on diffrent areas of tennessee for months and haven't been able to get much help Someone plese help me out.
I have heard Franklin, or johnson city were nice, but haven't been able to get much info

Franklin is nowhere near the Kentucky border and is actually 6 minutes closer to the Northern Alabama border then it is Kentucky.
I would look into Gallatin, Hendersonville, and/or Mt. Juliet.
The Nashville area is pretty decent as far as accepting diffrent races. There has been quite a bit of racist grafiti latley in Franklin, TN and there was also a kid kicked off his highschools campus in Franklin for having a noose hanging from his rearview mirror.
Nashville has a pretty bad gang problem. Antioch and Madison are particularly bad. The housing costs are going up pretty quickly and the economy has seemed to hit a snag. My wife has a 4 year degree and hasn't been able to find a job for over a month.
I moved here from Florida about 7 years ago with the same intentions of raising a family, leaving Florida because of the rising crime rates, gangs, housing prices, insurance, ect, ect but now find myself leaving Nashville for the same reasons.
I love Nashville but can't see myself raising my family here any longer. Believe it or not, I've found a better life in Texas.
Good luck !

What about Clarksville? It's close to KY and when I was living there (Northeast Middle School district) it was very culturally diverse. It was a nice safe place, and wasn't city like yet has many conveniences. Good Luck on your decision. I love being back here in TN.

Maybe you should try West Nashville, there are suburbs such as Bellevue, West Meade area, those are nice, more family friendly. North/East Nashville is a little rough for me. I personally don't like Clarksville.

I don't know much about Johnson City...Franklin is a historic town....enough said, it's located in Williamson Co. They have excellent schools there,(lot's of money in the county) but it's more on the Southern side of Tennessee, below Nashville/Davidson Co. I like the far West Nashville area myself. Check out Bellevue....

Hi, Dalene.
Well, I may be a bit biased here but given your requirements I'd like to suggest my hometown of Hendersonville, around 18 miles northeast of Nashville. It's not a terrible commute to Nashville for work purposes, though I'd suggest that with current gas prices you might want to look into carpooling or even our (developing) public transportation system.
Hendersonville has around 40,000-50,000 people according to current estimates, but has been getting more economic and home development in the past 2-3 years. Still, it has a quiet suburban character that's a nice escape from the Nashville hustle and bustle. Hendersonville is very safe, as the local cops pretty much work like madmen to keep all of Nashville's gang problems out of the city. It's the definition of a family-friendly community, and you're not going to have many problems raising your kids here.
As far as racial tolerance, Hendersonville is a lot better than a good deal of Southern towns the same size. In private, some people still hold bigoted or misguided views (as is true almost everywhere). However, you're not going to encounter any outright hatred or discrimination here. 75% of the community will think nothing of your children being mixed-race, and those that do will keep their mouths shut about it because they don't want to look ignorant.
Anyway, that's just a small bit of info about Hendersonville as related to your questions. I can tell you a lot more, if you need any help.

Howdy. Welcome to the forum, I hope we can help you make a decision as to the best place to raise your children. As a Mom myself and a single one for quite a while, I totally understand your fears. I moved here from FL almost 12 years ago and I have never regretted it and I can't imagine living anywhere else.
However, before I just out right suggest the Tri-Cities area just because I love it here, I and others here, really need a bit more info before we can make an educated suggestion to you as for a place to look.
What kind of job will you be looking for? Do you need a job? What kind of commute time is acceptable to work? Will you need child care?
When you have down time (I know, right now you probably feel you don't have any but if you did) what do you like to do? Out side activities, clubs, organizations? What kind of activities do your children like? Are they involved in activities/sports now that they want to continue?
If you could answer these questions or give us some more info about what you want out of everyday life in a new home town, maybe we all could give you better answers.

Welcome... Go to Google get a map of Tennessee. Say where is a good place. Pick a town then find their Chamber of Commerce, Send them a e-mail requesting information on their town / city. Yes you will get tons of junk mail and hundreds of real estate offers. But you will be able to see what that town / city has to offer. The Internet is a great place to start. Are they old enough to travel. Go to Tennessee and enjoy it's beauty the people and the scenery. Their are loads of people on this forum that will give you alsorts of information, Just ask Have a nice day

Morristown is a nice sized small town that offers about everything one would want. Its about between knoxville and Johnson city with less than 30000 people . I just bought land in Sneedville 45 minutes to the north up next to Va. but its real small ,1200 people and in the mountains, just what I was looking for. Everybody I have met have been extremly nice. I dont think you will have problems.I still live in Fla for now but cant wait to get moved in the next few months.
good luck
