Serpent Handlers (Morristown, Unicoi: sick, house, friend)

My neighbor told me that there is an actual serpent handling church in Morristown, TN. Does anyone know if this is true? Not that I want to go, just curious.

I don't think they're all that rare...there was one near my friend's house in knoxville as well.

I don't understand the concept, but they're around.

I sure wouldn't want to live near one. Things happen, and you wouldn't want to be around when all of the snakes get loose.

I don't even know...do they actually use venomous snakes? And...what's the point of the snake thing?

I remember in the Bible the snake from adam and eve, and some old fella's staff turned into a snake at some point (hello, keep it clean here!).

But in terms of practical applications I can't see snakes as useful at church, only a distraction...

Some people around here take their snake handling very seriously. The rest of us take not handling snakes just as serious!

Well there is that pesky directive, take up thy serpent, or something. I don't exactly know of any right off (could ask around if you want, williboy ) but I'm sure they're in just about all the counties up here. Greene, Hancock, Hamblen, Cocke, Unicoi and Johnson especially.

Mark 16:17,18 is the verse from the Bible on which these churches are based.
Mark 16:17 "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues".
Mark 16:18 " They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover".
