This is my first time in this forum. I will like to know which will be the best area for us in Chatanooga. We do not like to live in the city, but will like to to work there. We will be looking for a small house to repair or "as is" to buy.
Or will be more practical to just rent at first and see how things go. We do not like gated communities so a house in the outskirts will be nice with a little land like an acre. Our daughter is planning to go for her master in UTC so it can not be too far from the city. Also if somebody can inform us about contemporary Prebysterian Churches in the area, that will be great. We will
reallly, really appreciate any information. Thanks a lot!

I would love to hear from those of you who can offer some explanation for this.

Just a bit of info about N Carolina. My brother lived up there for a couple of years and stated that where he lived (Franklin) the people just did not like people from florida. He said it was so bad that the church he went to. The locals sat on one side and everyone else on the other side. He now has property in Tn. and so do I and we love the people of Tn.,
I too live in Florida- have for about 35 years. I am now at the point of trying to sell my home so I can build up in tenn,. I have property there already and hope also to retire there. I beleive I will know lots of people once I get to Tn. (everyone from FL) Please TN don't get tired of us, we love your beautiful state.

Just came back from a week in TN clearing our property. The weather was so nice. It was in the 80's but working outside wasn't bad at all. the night temps were in the upper 60's. Coming back to FL, it is just awful heat here. What we did in TN that week, we couldn't do here in FL until the heat subsides in October and i didn't even have 1 mosquito bite while up there and we were even camping. That to me was amazing. I come home, step out of the truck not even 5 minutes and i'm chewed up from head to toe. Oh i can't wait to move. Just be careful who you contract with. Excavator man and son we hired was great and very nice at $75/hr and he recommended a local rock crusher man who charges $110 to crush a ridge line. well once that man found out who we were, his rate went up to $210/hr. Excavator guy never heard of him charging that much before and he thought it was because we were from FL. Too bad he took the extra pay away from the excavator man. We told the exacavator man that because of the rock crusher guy charged and extra $600, we were cleaned out of cash otherwise we would have paid him another day to keep on working but he said he'd work with us as needed and if we wanted him to check on the place or had anything he could do just to give him a call and he'd check on it for us. Really nice man.
The rents i noticed from the paper were much cheaper around $450 - $600 depending on size of rental. Didn't notice a big difference on grocery cost at all. it all seemed the same as here in FL. I'm assuming the cost of living reflects in the utilities, rent and taxes as the daily things like groceries and gas were about the same.

Hi All,
I love reading your posts! So much information. My husband and I are in our mid 50's, nearing retirement. We are natives to WNC where we have seen our beautiful mountain land overdeveloped and OVERPRICED. High end developers have moved in which created a ridiculous housing market.
We have been eyeing Tenn for quite some time and for many reasons. Tenn is one of the most industrialized states in the nation. So I believe jobs are available in Tenn, WNC has lost all of their lure to employers because of the high $ housing market and water issues. Yes I said water...Buncombe county has experienced years of trying to replace old water lines that are failing due to the overdevelopment. When we moved out of Buncombe County, our water bill was $50.00 a month. That was in 2000, no telling how much it is now. We are currently in Henderson County, just outside of Brevard and seeing a tremendous amount of growth. Since we built our house in 2002, we have seen many farms sell out to developers. These farms consisted of 400 ac or more. Just recently, a developer purchased 1600 ac and is developing 7 Falls Golf Club. It's a Premier course with Arnold Palmer backing it. It's private (of course) and a lot is going for $300,000 and up. We can see the development from where we live. The developers have bulldozers in the streams on the property which is really going to an impact on the enviroment. It's hard for me to watch.
Any information that you can supply to us on East Tenn would be helpful.

How sad, to hear that about all that land. What kind of info are you looking for? There is a BUNCH of info here on this forum. Just look in the Tri-Cities (Johnson City, Kingsport Bristol, Sub forum and the main TN forum. Anything specific that is not covered there or you might miss, please feel free to ask, there are a lot of great people here that like helping out.

This is my first time posting and would just like to put in some input. I'm from New York right outside of Buffalo and presently considering relocating to Tennessee. Unlike other northerners who would rather go to NC or wherever, I still would like the four seasons, just not as much snow. Although a lot of friends here are considering NC. Most is because of the snow. New York taxes are outrageous here and buying a home is ridiculous. For a decent location you have to spend a good 200,000 which doesn't even guarantee you a good home.

There is so much to do here I feel like I don't to get to everything! Plus we have a great nightlife- major concert town, tons of 5 star resturants. And it's an open atmosphere- you learn to appreciate alot of different languages and cultures. Of course my husband and son fish alot- both fresh and salt.
My friend is visiting the Murfresboro area this coming weekend and we have talked about both families moving but I'm nervous- would we keep busy and have fun?
I used to live in Huntsville AL and I hated it, so that probably has something to do with it. Although I did learn that the health care at Huntsville Hosp. is FAR above what I found in Florida- even if I did triple my salary. (I'm a nurse).
Thanks for any insight.

You're a city person. Find a big city to live in, like Nashville, or you won't be happy.

I am sorry I didn't read all the other replies before responding, but here are my reasons:
1) This was my favorite side of the mountains when I vacationed here.
2) No hurricanes (I imagine that this is a factor in N. V Florida, the Northerners don't think Hurricanes in the Carolinas whereas Floridians 'might' be more aware of such considerations.
3) 'No' Tornadoes. Allegedly only 2 recorded tornadoes in all history for Knox.
4) No major Earthquakes (at least not centered here)

I've seen one or two former TN forum posters names in other state forums so I'm assuming they just decided against TN.
Or, it could mean they like it and don't want anyone else to move here and ruin it by creating the same conditions they fled.
Or, I suppose, they could be too busy doing the things in their new home, I feel guilty about not having done yet.
Or, they could just be stinky people that grabbed up a lot of info and deserted us once they got what they needed. They used us and dumped us!
