I haven't been there since I was a kid. It really depends on what you consider bad. My bad might be different from yours, and vice versa. but, I can help you with info on Homeschooling. {My brothers live in West Virginia.... one is in Crab Orchard, and the other is in Beckley. When I was in the third grade, we had to live with our Granny C for the rest of the school year... went to a little bitty school in Fireco. It had combined classrooms. Oh, and Granny C didn't have indoor plumbing, and we had to take baths in a big old metal tub that she dragged in and out of the house. Last I heard, she finally got indoor plumbing and then sold the house.} I wish you luck in your search. ![]() |

What else are you looking for in a hometown besides the size, being in or near mountains, and possibly a homeschooling group?

Most of the crime in the Northeast area seems to be domestic related stuff. Though there have been a couple of busts of people making meth recently. I'm not sure about rent prices. Other than the MT. City paper, you might want to look up the Elizabethton Star. Roan Mountain might be another area to look at. There are two state parks in Carter County as well as part of the Cherokee National Forest. Within the Forest is Watauga lake. Mountain City and Roan Mountain get some snow. I don't know how much they have gotten lately with these dustings we've had in the other areas. There is a SuperWalmart in Elizabethton. Other than that from the areas mentioned the next closest would be in NC. While it may look like Bristol would be the closest of the Tri-cities to Mountain City, part of the road between there is a tiny winding road. If you pass a car, you just about have to stop and one side is straight down a mountain- with little to no guard rails. I would hate to travel that road very often. |

As I was reading through your latest post, I too was thinking Carter County, Elizabethton, or Erwin might interest you? They are far enough from the city to warrant the cheaper rents and such but close enough to drive to for things you are looking for amenity wise.
Just a thought. ![]() |

My family just purchased a home in Mountain City. We chose this location because we understand there is a culinary arts school in Johnson City. Can anyone give me a little information about it. My 14 year old has been accepted to culinary arts school in New Jersey and we will have to transfer her.
Thanks. Lori |
