Default Culture Shock

If you don't like it here in East Tennessee, THEN GO BACK. I've been here now for over three years and love it. We did our research before moving here, and even though the job market is next to nothing (unless you know someone) the place is our little piece of paradise. I am lucky in having a job that requires travel, and there is no place I'd rather be. I've seen people move in the area and do nothing but complain, grip, throw their money around, and think that they are so much better than anyone else around here. One thing I have learned is "The locals don't care for people like that." You are no better than anyone here and as far as many are concerned "If you don't like it, then go back where you came from." Every place has there good and bad qualities. Get on the internet and RESEARCH. There are affortable housing if you look, there are jobs if you are not too good for actually working, there are nice and honest people if you look. Look for the good in things instead of just hating the bad.

Question Question for Split

Hi Split- could you elaborate on this tax Tenn imposes on equity made on a sale of a home? We may be selling up in Nevada and moving to TN later this year, we've had our house for 20 years here, so it's worth a lot more than we paid for it. Would we be taxed if we used that equity to buy a house in Tennessee?

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen!

I have actually seen some of these people waving their money around. The locals just smile, dig in their heels and won't budge. It's hilarious! These crass newcomers cannot understand that being nasty will get you nowhere here.

I agree about the job situation, too. At first I thought it was because we were not southern that we were having a tough time, but the market is very tight. I talked to a guy that was born and raised here. He said he had a tough time getting a job. He has his bachelor's from UT (everybody does!). He wanted to be a history teacher or a cop. No luck.

He said big companies like Denso are next to impossible to get into. He said you need a relative to get in.

Yes, there are jobs but it is not all that easy. And they don't pay as much as a lot of folks are use to getting, too.

I love this area, but you really have to love a southern lifestyle to appreciate it. Some do, some don't and complain all the time.

Exclamation IRS Tax less than 2 years, Not TENN.

IMA: Only a U.SA. IRS tax on house profit if less than 2 years residance, not a TENN item. . Check your Private MESSAGE MAIL on upper right screen at log in I sent you more details.
Years ago ruling was wait till 55 years old then house sale was exempt. Current laws allow a RESIDENT to keep profit every 2 years. Also believe a couple has $500 K benefit and a SINGLE $250,000 . Sometimes a DEATH will impact when to sell the family house if in same calendar year, or get re-married and wait 2 more years if close to $500,000 profit.
People who FLIP a house after re-model or RENTALs need to pay IRS profit tax.

Question Difficulty in finding jobs?

Ok, so the job issue is making me a little worried , I am moving outside the nashville area and am a nurse. Will it be difficult to get a job in this field? It sounds like a lot of you have had a hard time finding jobs. What occupations are you referring to?

Yes, I second that about the job situation.
My friends tell me, the good thing in Knoxville to get into is trucking and hospital. (I guees "sysco" is coming to town??)
But, that job problem and the market is so bad all over, no matter where you go. Being at the right spot, at the right time, is all that matters sometimes.
Or, knowing someone who can "pull a few strings" for ya.

And, you are absolutely right about the "fresh meat newcomers"....lol. You can really tell sometimes, where they are from. They have the mentality to push, shove, get nasty, to get what they want........... ....... when a simple and friendly word will just do fine here!
Some people just don't get it. They don't drop their attitutes, and won't change either, no matter where they go, and then they are on this forum and complain, how bad the locals are, and why they are not welcoming...
Are you kidding me?????
Hope, certain people moving in from certain states, don't ruin it (especially for the locals), because I see firsthand, what it has done here in FL !

With the large amount of baby boomers hitting their retirement years I would think any health professional would have no trouble finding a job in the southeast but I could be wrong. The question you aren't asking is what kind of pay you should expect when you move to TN. Perhaps the issue won't be finding a job but finding one at the rate of pay you think you should get. Have you looked at the classifieds in the local paper to see what they are paying nurses in the area where you are going?

According to the Salary.com website, the median expected salary for a typical Staff Nurse - RN in Nashville, Tennessee is $56,759. I would imagine as you go out from the city, that number goes down.
