Hey guys, I've been looking at land in Celina recently. If there are so many of us friendly people headed that way, we can start our our little group of friends. And we won't include 'them'.

Celina
Try Swan Ridge. You can actually stay there on one of the spec houses. The property is beautiful, the view better. Google Swan Ridge and you will find it.

I'm glad I found this forum, and thank everyone for being forthright regarding the "ambiance" of the area. My husband and I are considering buying property close to Celina, and now we will know not to expect the Welcome Wagon!
Which town close to Celina would be best for staying in while arranging details for closing, for supplies and finding a builder for a small, rustic cabin, etc....? For the time being, we hope to use the property for us and our three grown children and their families...camp, fish, get away from civilization. Late, retirement? Any recommendations for real estate attorneys for a closing?
Also, the Obey River looks wonderful...the whole area actually. I second the idea for a Friendly Celina Society.

Honesty is better... I know I was "sucked" into the "oh the whole area is so friendly and you'll just love the people" thing when I was moving out here from Winston Salem, NC... BOY Did I get a rude awakening!! So I don't sugar-coat it for anyone coming here. If the people are NOT FROM HERE, they have a whole different attitude and outlook as long as they haven't been here for so long that they "act" like the locals.
Livingston has one motel, the Overton Inn... it's good for a bed and bath. NOTHING ELSE!! There is a diner right there at the motel which has home cooking... that's the best it gets until you get into Cookeville which is about 35 miles from Livingston.
I like the idea of bringing people together to show the locals how to be a friendly society but I don't think they pay enough attention to learn. The old saying "can't teach an old dog new tricks..." rings true here.
Anyway, looking forward to new faces to the area. I could use a reason to get out of the house during the week days. LOL

Another place you might stay overnight is at one of the cabins at Standing Stone State Park. It is located just past the Overton County line, about 10 minutes from Celina. Keep in mind, though, that they are rustic cabins. They have electricity and showers, but no TV or wifi.

I totally forgot about those cabins! But it's not a bad looking spot if you want to just relax and look around the area but definitely is lacking in the "signals" for cell phones or anything WiFi-ish. I have found I did have a couple of bars of service (at times) with my Verizon BUT that's with one arm pointing up to the southern skies, a leg propped up on a stump, leaned back and turning body slightly upside down.. THEN I could text a whole sentence but forget the dialing out.
Anyway... it would be better than driving the 60 miles round trip into Cookeville 'cause Hwy 111 seems to get longer and longer the more you have to travel it daily.
Have a great day! Hope it's warm where you are. It's ALMOST 15 here now!! Be glad to see SPRING/SUMMER warmth.

Your comment shows your ignorance about the area, and especially the people.

We moved to Byrdstown in Feb. 09. Purchased a rustic cabin walking distance from Dale Hollow. We spent 1 day looking at homes in Celina area and knew it wasn't for us. Lake is beautiful, but a lot of scenery near Celina is ruined by trashy homes, broken down vehicles, dogs running wild, and boarded up businesses. The property is cheap for a reason! Buyer beware.
Byrdstown (Pickett county near Dale Hollow)is nicer area, though there are a few eye sore properties, for the most part it is a more scenic and definately less trashy. Hwy 111 is great drive to more conveniences (Cookeville), but watch your speed as it is heavily patrolled.
We love TN and our little piece of it. Locals here have been very friendly and good to us. Good luck in your search. Just my 2 cents worth.
