Water Lines Coming To Cumberland Cove
In a long anticipated action, the Crossville city council approved accepting a grant and loan agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program to help fund the construction of a water line to the Cumberland Cove development at the western side of Cumberland County.

We just made a trip to Crossville, really loved the area and are thinking about a move there. We have some rescue horses though and have a few questions about water. In the article just posted, it mentioned the cost of drilling a well and filtering the water. Do you have to filter well water there because of the iron content? How high is it? What is the cost of city water and do you drink that without filtering it? The property that we looked at does not have a well, but considering the fact that rationing was imposed recently, I wonder if we should research the cost of drilling a well in light of the needs of running livestock. Sorry for the diversion off specific topic, but these questions have been weighing heavily since our trip and I thought this thread might be viewed by people there in the know. Thanks!!

If I remember correctly from a thread I read on this forum last year, I believe someone said it usually costs around $10,000 to drill a well. I believe in most cases, a water filter would be necessary. You should be able to drink city water without filtering it. Hooking up to city water will be much less costly than drilling a well.

You may need to check with the city/county. In most places here in N.E.TN if public water is available, they will not allow you to drill a well but pretty much force you to hook up to city. In your case of livestock, they might let you dig the well for a barn, but not the house.
Same case with Septic, if there is city septic, they will not allow you to put in your own septic tank.

Really? I didn't know that at all. I don't think that's the case in Greene County, but I could definitely see it in meddlesome Washington and Sullivan.

Actually is was in Greene county where I ran into this hahahaaha.
I bought a house with a septic tank yet hooked up to city water. There was a well and well house on the property. I wanted to fix the well pump and use it as I prefer it to city water. The county wouldn't let me and told me if I had any problem with my septic the only option I would have was to fill it in and hook up to city septic. This was out in the county too (Midway). I was rather floored to seeing as they are so lax about codes and such with building and what have you.

Wow, that floors me too. Okay, maybe I could understand if you're on Holly Creek or something right in town, but in Midway?? LOL! You could just build an outhouse and use it and no one would ever know, because nobody ever comes by!

Yes I love "country life" but even I draw the line somewhere, I MUST have indoor plumbing, call me a snob LOL!!! ( Please no offense to the wonderful couples on here who are living "off grid", this just proves you are stronger people than I. )

They had that in the Southern Standard a few days ago too. Saw it in the store on the way home.
