I wanted to move to Cookeville myself. However, coming from NY I ended up in Florida first. really liked Cookeville but with a 9 and 11 year old I was concerned. Need jobs, health insurance and such. Been to the area many times and think it's a great place.

I was born and raised in TN until age 52,I have always heard southerners are sooo friendly, and of course this is from northerners. With the interstate systems we do get around now, and if you are in a city thats growing(check out the stats on City-Forum) and has more than 10,000 in population chances are there are folks living there from all over the country, North , South , East and West. People in Kansas like to hear my "accent" which is really just a southern draw, and some think Southerners are slow because of it, but I promise the majority of Tennesseans are intelligent, normal, good people. Like anywhere else, they can be nosey, self centered, rude and downright mean, the south may run at a slower pace and surely have more Southern Baptist but hey, I've never lived any further north than Memphis TN and if its a faster pace than Memphis I couldnt make it there, the difference is in whether you are in a med-big city or small town. I imagine in a small town you may just have more curious locals than anything. Get involved and get to know them if thats what you want, church or the YMCA are good avenues. Remember first impressions are lasting most the time, dont come off like a know it all. Southerners do like to be helpful, if you need something ,or not, just ask. You have to reach out and show you want to fit in no matter where you go. Good luck

Great post! If I remember correctly, you were considering a move to the Cumberland Plateau area. I believe I sent you a private message a few weeks ago with my Realtor's name and phone number. Are you still considering this area?

My daughter is handicap, and I am not sure if you mentioned a wheelchair or not, and we have had certain issues with her chair, and the steepness of some sidewalks. But from the posters it sounds like you won't have a problem....

I've been here a year already. Originally from upstate NY and I and my husband are both disabled and Tn. hasn't treated either of us badly. In fact in NY I was asked frequently if I had been in a car accident because I wear a brace on my leg, (I'm a stroke survivor.)
I've found that the people are sincere, welcoming and friendly here. I suspect it may be the "yankees" with the attitude, not the southerners. The weather is also wonderful with 4 seasons and snow that is melted by noon!
I can't say enough good things about my new adopted home state. I'll never go back to NY to live as there are so many wonderful things right here.
