If you are looking for more dining options, etc... I would recommend staying near the I-40, I-45 cross road as well. The columns shopping area is a very nice, developed commercial area.

Also, you can look around the Wolfchase mall area in Bartlett / Memphis area right off I-40.

As Mike in TN said, just be aware of your surroundings - should have a pleasant experience in either of those areas.

I was looking at homes on a popular Realtor site and homes start at $9k in Jackson

This usually means a drug infested area. I could be wrong and hope I am for that price!

I think for $9K you're getting a house that (a) probably needs to be bulldozed it needs so much work and (c) is in such a lousy part of town that the property value is pretty much nil. Cheapest house listed right now in Memphis is $2900, so Jackson is pretty upscale in comparison!

...was there a (b)...lol

Search zip coeds and mapped areas, it is easy to target the parts of town that can be considered questionable (being nice).

Moving closer to 40 and north of 40 the property values really jump and look very nice.

Jackson has a diversity similar to areas of Ohio where you can buy a "home" for under $10k up to $200k within a few miles

I have spend good nights in Jackson and nervous nights in Jackson at the same location. The last time we were there we did not know what was going on outside and I was very happy that my 6'2" husband was with me. I am not sure I would have slept at all otherwise. I don't know where you are entering I-40 but I would recommend your trying to find a place before Jackson or Memphis. Both places looked a little rough to me. After you get through Memphis it is a long time before a safe looking place shows up in my opinion. I can't remember the name of it, but there is a town about 40 miles before Jackson that looked better to me. I love the food at Jackson, but that one little experience will have me thinking twice before staying the night there again.

One of the posters mentioned the Howard Johnsons. I noticed that one when I was looking and wish we had stayed there. The staff was wonderful where we stayed and the room was fine, but there was a place of business next door that had a lot of teens hanging around outside and they came over and seemed to be very interested when we unpacked our car. As I told you, my husband is 6'2" so they did not mess with us, but I would have hated to have been there by myself.

I'm not going to bother to look, but I'm sure there are very few homes under $20K. My parents live in one of the very worst areas of Jackson and homes there probably sell for about $35K.

I'd give you the site to look at but the mods will delete it.

Just go to Realtor and add a dot com after. Type in Jackson and TN and see for yourself.

The streets with extremely low housing costs...as low as 9K are;

Still though, pull up Trulia and you aren't going to find many homes at all that sell for that amount.
