"My home state is being destroyed - by people looking to get out of where they are from but make TN just like it was where they left."
I'd bet the Cherokee felt pretty much the same. Ya think?

The unemployment rate in Florida is 3.3% (Dec 2006) according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The unemployment rate in Tennessee is 4.7% (Dec 2006).
The US unemployment rate (Dec 2006) is 4.5%. In 1997 (Dec 1997), the year farthest back the US Unemployment Rate Table goes on the BLS website, was 4.7%.
Also, over the 2006 year, 32 states and the District of Columbia posted statistically significant increases in employment. The largest employment increases occurred in Texas (+213,200), Florida (+212,600), California (+170,300), and Arizona (+115,200).
Over the 2006 year, nonfarm employment increased in 49 states and the District of Columbia and decreased in only 1 state, Michigan (-19,800 or -0.5 percent).
And lastly, all four US regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) posted significantly lower unemployment rates than a year earlier.
Unless you live in Michigan, don't buy the political rhetoric about jobs and unemployment. It appears that as far as employment/unemployment goes, the US is doing just fine (especially in Florida) compared to 10 years ago in December, when it also was doing just fine.

I'm originally from NJ and now live in FL. Like many flloridians want to move out of the state for various reasons. When considering where to relocate I knew I wanted to say in the South (can't do really cold winters anymore) and I have settled on Tennessee, although I'm not sure where yet. I can understand that native Tennesseeans do not want people from other states to move in and change their beloved culture and scenic beauty. However, there are those of us that want to move to the state simply because of that culture and beauty and have no intention of changing it. The reason I have settled on Tennessee is because I envision a slower-placed life (away from the rat race) with beautiful scenery and mountains. I hope to be able to buy a house with some property (which I can no longer afford in Florida). Granted I do want some of the comforts of living in a more populated area - I don't want to drive 20 miles to a grocery store - but that just means picking the right area to move to, not changing the state. Anyway, this is my two cents as a Northerner transplanted to Florida who wants to move to Tennessee.

I think you are very right. I picked Tennessee over Western NC because Western NC was full of big city northern transplants (just like Florida) with the same kind of ideas, issues and attitudes that I don't want any part of anymore. I can't help where I was born and raised (NYC and vicinity) but in retirement (with no ties to a job), I can and want to get away from you people for the very reason hiknapster said. You aren't moving to Tennessee because you are looking for a traditional southern lifestyle, you're running away from problems in your own state and because Tennessee is cheap and the weather is tolerable, so it's looking good to you...until you get there and then you start picking it apart and trying to change the place.
North Carolina has a few years jump on TN with this issue. I think it's largely because it's easier for transplanted Floridians (formerly from the northeast) to move up and down the I-95 corridor for visiting the former places they are from, but that's just a guess. I used to read the NC city-data forum a lot until it started to dawn on me that the whining and kvetching from transplants about just about everything and everyone might be foreshadowing what Tennessee can expect within a few years.
WAAAAH, WAAAH, WAAAH the roads and schools are overcrowded. Well, they weren't before you moved here. WAAAAH, WAAAH, WAAAAH people smoke, shoot guns and go to church here and they are so stupid. Well, who is the stupid person who moved to a place for which they were so unsuited? WAAAAH, WAAAAAH, WAAAAH, there's no culture here like where I came from? Oh there's culture all right, it's just not YOUR culture. WAAAAH, WAAAAH, WAAAAAH, there's a good old boys network here and they won't hire me because I'm a Yankee. Well, maybe, just maybe, they don't want to spend the money to hire somebody who probably won't last in the job and will jump ship the first time they find more tolerable weather, pay, culture, etc., someplace else, while Jim Bob over there has lived here his entire life, has roots in the community and might be an employee for life. WAAAAH, WAAAAH, WAAAAH there are poor people here and some of them live in trailers. How very observant of you. Should they all pick up and move because you just arrived in town and want to build a $300,000 house in the place where they have lived their entire life? WAAAAH, WAAAAH, WAAAAAH I absolutely can't live without my favorite Fancy-Schmancy store. Fancy-Schmancy store wasn't there before you got there, either, so I guess for your bad location choice you will have to not live. WAAAAAH, WAAAAAH, WAAAAAH, I miss the ocean. A State official is going to Myrtle Beach next week, maybe he can trade you for a mountain climber and tobacco farmer to be named later. WAAAAH, WAAAAAH, WAAAAAH, a real estate guy told me the winters were mild here BUT BUT we've had snow and it's cold. Those real estate guys, what a bunch of kidders.

After re-reading this post a few times I'm really feeling that southern hospitality. There seems to be an undercurrent of resentment here for new comers to the state. The thread sounds like a release of pent up anger. Hope the majority of people don’t feel this way.

I was born in Florida and these new "floridians" make fun of me too! They would love to take my home and turn it into a Cuban mansion.

Thanks Brax. I usually moderate FL- and am used to that tone-lol. If people want to move and then have an opinion, that is why they utilize these boards.
I have not seen a lot of whining here so I am not sure who is being referenced there. If people are asking about culture or things to do, that seems within reason to me. No place is perfect. I havent met anyone wanting to "change the state". That seems ridiculous.

As has been explained on here by numerous other posts, it's not a resentment of newcomers per se, but it's a resentment of newcomers who think they know better than the rest of us and want to change the way we live. If a newcomers wants to contribute to our way of life, that's great. But please don't come into our home and tell us we need to rearrange our furniture just because that's the way it's done where you're from.
And for the record, I seriously doubt Northerners would be very happy, either, if all of a sudden Southerners started moving up north and insisting that Northerners need to adapt to our lifestyle and not the other way around.
