Well, they've bumped it to $4.99 in West Knoxville, because so many stations are out. All the Weigels have plastic bags over the nozzles and many Pilots are out. A lot of them have taken down the numbers from their road signs. I guess they got tired of going out and changing them every 15 minutes.
I have never seen such shameless price gouging! If something isn't done, it will be worse tomorrow... assuming, of course, that there is any gas left in Knoxville. Hopefully, this means the truckers will just pass us on by.

gas is going up
yesterday(9/11/08) here in Fl the wholesale price of gas jumped $1.52 It was around $3.40. You do the math. The state is under an emergency situation which prevents massive increases but the stations will be impacted most adversely. I saw the pumps at the station by me bagged off. Im not sure if they just won't sell since the loss would be so great or what. the normal profit for a station is 10-20 cents. in t he last year or so they have been jumping to the 25 cent mark. but the numbers are not there for them. I think it was the wholesalers reaction to Ike but it seems like a screw to me.

We are now squandering all of our gas to race on over to Halls to buy more. By the time we get there, it will be $5.99.

I wonder how many people will have to call in sick next week due to not being able to afford to drive to work or because they don't have gas. They are saying that Knoxville might be low or out until next Thursday.

There's a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, headed toward Houston and 20-25% or the U.S. gasoline refining capacity ( EIGHT refineries on the upper Gulf Coast) is shut down and will possibly be damaged when hurricane Ike makes landfall later Friday night/early Saturday morning. Even if not damaged it will take several days to power up as you don't just switch these plants on like light switches.
And Yeh, a lot of those stations, seeing Ike coming, probably jumped the gun too and caused a lot of your problems. The following links may help explain.

Hurricane Ike strains fuel supply, affects gas prices | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Dallas Business News
