We live in the Florida Panhandle and have been here for 4 years. I love the beaches & the weather, but everything else has gone downhill. When I moved here, housing was very affordable. Due to the hurricanes, everything has gone up so much. It isn't worth it to me to live here anymore. We love the mountains of Tennessee. We are into rock climbing, hiking etc. and come visit Tn several times a year. So, we figured that was the best place for us to be. Another bad thing about Florida is that if you are in construction, you are screwed! There are so many licenses, insurances, exemptions....crap...to deal with. You can't blow your nose without a license. It isn't fair. Then, you have all of the out of state contractors that come in and charge half what you do and do a terrible job. The beauty just isn't worth it anymore.

I am soooooo with you...I have been living in Miami for 5 years and I am ready to get the hell out!!!!!!!!!....The only reason why I have not moved yet is because I graduate from college now and my ceremony is in July. I also own a town home here which I need to put up for sale, I need to find a good paying job in Knoxville, TN, and once that is done I am so out of here!

Miami to me is depressing, expensive, crowded, believe it or not boring, stressful, very competitive, traffic is outrageous, tight to live, high home taxes, high car insurance, general expenses are high, not a great place to form a family, people are very materialistic, hard to find friends, hectic life, etc, etc, etc, and much more.....

I do love the weather so this is something I am going to have to get use to once I move to Knoxville TN. I am not a fan of cold weather....but I know it will be worth sacrificing....I have no kids yet and I know that TN is a very good place to live play and work...I definitely want my children to grow up there, kids here have a lot more bad influence….My husband and I plan to move within the spring of 2008. We plan to visit in May and check out Maryville and Knoxville....I wish I could move tomorrow and start my new life up there and forget this nightmare....Just check out the forums on this site from Florida and you'll see how frustrated people are here....too bad all the Americans are moving from here, pretty soon Miami will be Central/South America....Miami will be a lost paradise...and a lost State...

Miami to me is only good for tourist; this is not a city to live in...it has beautiful beaches and lot's of night life and youth. But to me this is not worth it anymore...
AS long as I can find a good paying job in Knoxville I have nothing to worry about....I recently received my degree in Business with a major in Marketing so wish me luck on finding my career in Knoxville TN. I sure hope to be up there with all of you soon!

Smile leaving soon

Hope to be leaving Tampa area by July of this year. When we first moved to this small suburb North of Tampa, there was nothing here but one grocery store and a one lane road in each direction and we loved it. Now there are 3 lanes going in each direction and more stores and subdivisions than we can handle. It often takes me 5-7 minutes just to pull out of my street because the traffic does not stop. We are leaving Florida to get back to the peace and quiet, and the simple life we had 10 years ago. We have neighbors that are rude and park their car blocking our drive way and yell at us if we ask them to move it so we can get out. Of course, the cost of everything is out of control, but that is not the major factor in moving. Getting back to the simpler life is. We hope to be in the Greeneville - Johnson City area soon.

My husband and I are from just south of Sarasota Florida. We both have been in Florida for 17 years.
He is originally from Michigan, and I from Pennsylvania. We both want to get out of here for the same reasons everyone else has. High taxes, insurance out of control, and the whole Florida attitude. Everyone is in such a big hurry to get nowhere!
At the same time, we are hoping the same thing doesn't happen in Tennessee that has happened here.
We already have our property on top of beautiful Cagle Mountain in Dunlap, and are counting down the days till we make the permanent move.

Default Crime

Now it's nearly everyday somewhere. And drugs, never a problem, but that meth is common now. It's not the same as 20 years ago when I came down here. I suggest that when you visit the area to listen to the even local news for several days and read the newpaper; that will give you a picture I'm discribing. Don't get me wrong. I have every intention of moving back to my beloved mountains and home as soon as possible; but I think many people think there isn't much crime up there. Granted, it may not be quite as bad as Florida, but it's definately there. I might suggest checking out crime tables of cities of interest before deciding on a spot to move to.
Just wanted to comment having moved to TN in July, I have been paying quite a bit of attention to crime to crime rates. While I am sure crime has gone up in the past 20 years (like everywhere), I have found it very safe here compared to northeast cities that I have lived in.

Comparing TN to Florida, there are two cities on city-datas top crime cities in TN, Memphis and Chattanooga, and at least FIVE (5) in Florida. Living in east TN, most times the murders are in Knoxville, but I stay away from there anyway.

I have been told that meth used to be a major problem here, but meth busts are not in the news much anymore with new laws and harsh penalties. It is still around though. Just yesterday WBIR reported a "mobile lab" arrest in Morristown. Too much police pressure they have to go mobile now? Maybe it is worse in the Tri-towns area.

I guess having come from an area with truly high crime, this place is a breeze.

Personally, I hate Florida and always have. I dont like the people, the no change in seasons, the materialism and especially the traffic. Theres not much about Florida that i do like outside the sports. Hope it helps!

Well, I've lived in Orlando for 28 years. Grew up in NYC and lived there 28 years. I've never really took to Florida. I moved down here because of employment. After the first year, I asked my boss to get me out of here. I was told to put up with it for a bit longer. In the meantime, I got involved with someone and the rest as they say is history. Even though I always hated the summer weather here, the one thing I did like when I first moved down here was the people. Call it the stress of modern living or whatever. I find that people are more rude here than ever before. The traffic will never get better here. Unless you want to spend $3 or more to go from one end of town to the other. And of course, there's the tremendous increase in crime in Orlando. The Chamber of Commerce doesn't want you to know just how dangerous International Drive has become. A young couple from Ohio just got robbed at gunpoint in their hotel room yesterday. Happens more often than I care to see. Fortunately for me, I am looking at retirement in another year or so. Tennessee is definitely on my short list. I like the Chattanooga area a lot. Especially Signal Mountain. I've been reading this forum a great deal and I will definitely look into the Tri-Cities area as well. I'm counting the days.

Reading posts such as yours and others on here make me want to cry but also make me smile. I cry because I remember the old Florida, the Florida of my youth, the Florida my parents tell me about, the Florida I see in old family albums that go back to the late 1800s. It absolutely breaks my heart to see what has happened to my beloved Florida. My parents lived in Orlando pre-Disney (and before I was born) and talk about it with such fondness, back when Orlando was just a small farming community in the middle of giant orange groves and crystal clear lakes.

But I smile when I read that so many of you want to experience the supreme joy that many of us have found here in beautiful Tennessee. There are so many reasons to love Tennessee: taxes are low, traffic isn't bad, each season is a sight to behold, the mountains and hills are gorgeous, and, perhaps most importantly, the PEOPLE here are sooooo nice!!!

After living in Tennessee for 22 years, my parents made the huge mistake of retiring back to Florida (Citrus County). After 8 years, they came back to visit friends in Cookeville. I took my parents into a grocery store in downtown Cookeville, and almost as soon as we walked in the door, my mom started to cry. She felt such immense peace right there in the busy grocery store, everyone was friendly, SINCERELY friendly. She composed herself, and we went back to the meat department to buy some country ham. She started crying AGAIN because the butcher was also genuinely friendly. She couldn't help but be touched, after 8 years of surly grocery clerks in Florida who coudn't care less about making that special human connection with the customers.

I think more and more people will leave Florida for Tennessee. And as long as people move to Tennessee with the desire to become Tennesseans, I welcome them with open arms.

Great post JMT.

Even though I only lived in Florida nine long years, I saw a huge change. My husband moved to Florida when he was 12 and lived there 24 years. Miles and miles of Florida that he knew are completely gone.

I lived in Florida for 1.5 years. It was the worst 30 years of my life. I couldn't wait to get back to Tennessee (and I'm not native Tennesseean, having grown up in Houston).
