Default Former Floridian, now Tennessean

Well I spent the first 48 yrs of my life in Central Florida. I moved after ending a 20 yr marriage and was looking for a fresh start and a new landscape. Florida was getting too crowded for me. Greene County TN is still very rural and I have enjoyed it so far. Nice people, beautiful landscape and just a tad of snow in the winter.

Question How about acceptance of foreign cultures in the area?

Like I said in my previous post, my wife and I bought property in the Baileyton area in hopes of relocating there when I retire in a few years. My question is will my wife, who is from Thailand and is a Buddhist (though not an active one) experience prejudice in the area? I know the religious feelings in the area are strong. I am a Catholic and the issue of religion has never been of significance to us at all. If we have any children, they will be raised either as Catholic or another Christian religion more popular in Tennessee.

Just wanted some thoughts on this. Thanks.

Now it's nearly everyday somewhere. And drugs, never a problem, but that meth is common now. It's not the same as 20 years ago when I came down here. I suggest that when you visit the area to listen to the even local news for several days and read the newpaper; that will give you a picture I'm discribing. Don't get me wrong. I have every intention of moving back to my beloved mountains and home as soon as possible; but I think many people think there isn't much crime up there. Granted, it may not be quite as bad as Florida, but it's definately there. I might suggest checking out crime tables of cities of interest before deciding on a spot to move to.
Tennesse Gal - You are correct about the crime going up (although slightly and not very violent stuff) only a handful of murders a year, most of it is petty burgulay, gas station robbery stuff to get quick money for the Meth and ICE and cheap Loritab's they sell for about 4 to 5 bucks a pill.
But there is no organized crime (unless you think 5 hillbilly's plotting a same day multistore stick up is organized - they just caught them). So if your missing Tennessee and the mountains don't worry, the crime is not the problem, the living wage jobs are. But if enough of ya'll come back we can figure out something I guess, more call center jobs here instead of India would be a good start. WE really need more nurses and if someone would open up a nursing home - they could probably fill it up the first day. I see this trend happening now. I see more retired folks looking for a place, but if you really want to save money - just rent (it is down to $300 - $375 for a nice 2 br duplex or Apt, or small house) really i rent one for only $300 per month and work in Bristol then commute back to my home in Franklin Tn on weekends to see my kids. With Real Estate predicted to fall even more over the next several years then renting will be the best hedge against falling real estate prices. Besides do you really want to have all the responsibility of owning and fixing up a home when you are in your retirement years?
Not me I think i will just work about 15 more years and save up all i can then have a log home built on my family farm and live there in peace and quiet. With WIFI internet accessibility from the interstate a few miles away.
Probably raise some goats to mow the grass and try out my farming skills too.
If any of this is helpful send me a PM and click me up on the Reputation meter.
Thanks.
PS use Penskee truck rentals to make a cheap move from Florida to Tenn. A friend of mine at work just moved her dad's things from the home he sold in Pensacola FL and she said she saved over $250 vs U Haul.

Tinman313 - try Rent.com and select "Cats OK". I got 6 listings in the Johnson City area where I'm looking, and I see one in Crossville.

Hey, those bronzed babes in Floriduh have nothing on the babes in Tennessee! (I'm originally from Tampa, by the way. I do miss a real Cuban sandwich and Carmine's deviled crabs, though.)

Where in TN are you applying to law school?

I think you need to read the rest of the reasons people are leaving FL. If you will notice as I have, many of the people leaving or left, have lived in Florida for several years and some are orginal floridians leaving, so that should tell you, that money isn't the only reason people are leaving florida . . . I am not going to go into all the other reasons, you need to read peoples posts.
