I think you just pinpointed yet another reason I am soooo glad that my family left Florida. There are a lot, and I mean a LOT, of really arrogant people in Florida. I mean really smug people who think that Florida is the end-all and be-all of existence. Just because they can walk out into the back yards and pick oranges right off the trees (well, those neighborhoods that haven't bulldozed all the trees) they think we should all want to live like that. Well, monkeys pick their own fruit off of trees, too, but it doesn't mean I want to live like a monkey.
Hearing my parents talk about what Florida used to be like back when they were teenagers in the 1940s, it really was a paradise back then: laid-back Southern lifestyle, no traffic, lots of wide-open spaces, cheap land right on the waterfront, very low taxes, excellent schools, etc. Those days are long gone, and my beloved Florida of old has been paved into oblivion.

I was fortunate that I got to see your beloved Florida.
My husband grew up around Estero. He had an old beat up boat and would put in at some old outdoor bar near the estuary. He would swim with the gators. Of course, since we left, they have put up malls and paved over the place, but I saw it.
Another place that I loved, and God knows what they have done or about to do to it, is Everglades City. It's one of the few places left that is on the ocean and untouched.
So I KNOW and love what Florida was, and that is probably why we fit in so well here, and I am terrified that they will do to Tennessee what they did to the once beautiful state of Florida.

LOL, I have to agree with you, unfortunately I am related to one of them , but it didn't stop me from leaving FL. I lasted 3 yrs and left. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to deal with them in the hospitals and they were much worse there! I would have loved to see what it was back then, I would have loved it I am sure!

I remember a while back i saw your posts on the FL forum, i asked why you posted a comment on there complaining of FL. Since your so your so happy in TN, why be on the FL forum complaining how much you hated it there and discouraging others not to move there? Like you said above in your comment, why would you care if people are moving to FL? Believe me, the people moving to FL will hear all the problems by those of us who are still here.
I myself am one who likes FL but i'm also moving to TN. I never once bashed the state of TN yet you live there and have been bashing parts of TN yourself specifically where i plan to locate because YOU don't like the area i chose yet you don't even know where my property is. You must enjoy trying to discourage people whether it's moving to FL or parts of TN. There are good places to live in FL you just never found them just as there's good places in TN that you haven't found yet either.

How is that bashing Florida? I love the old Florida. I just hate what it has become.
That is completely different from people that come on the Tennessee forums in a snit because people are moving here and they LOOOOVE living in Florida. Why would they care?
Me? I'm upset because I saw what Florida was and has become. I cry for Florida.

I agree. I can't see why folks who aren't interested in moving or visiting TN are here bashing the state with their preconceived notions but they do have a right to post and they aren't breaking any forum rules.
Maybe it is jealousy? Maybe they are trying to convince themselves that they are better off because of where they live? Or maybe they just do prefer busier, tropical, ocean living and we prefer our mountains and slower pace of life? It takes all kinds to make the world go round. Now if we could all just lean to get along on this little planet happily, wow, what a world that would be.

Leaving Florida
I hope to leave Florida soon for pretty much the same reasons as Fleeing Florida and Kim Gallagher. Plus, nine years ago we moved from Sarasota to North Port because cost of living was outraguse and now North Port is the same...especially property taxes. Ours went up 66% in 2006 and then another 33% in 2007. Co workers have given us suggestion for three areas, Cookeville in Putnam County; McMinville in Warren County, and Manchester in Coffee County. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to which county has the most to offer?

Of those three places, Cookeville is the largest. It has more stores, more restaurants, more jobs, more schools than the others. However, I think Manchester would be a good alternative. I don't know what kinds of jobs you're interested in. Cookeville is home to a technological university (Tennessee Tech), and Manchester is next to an Air Force research center (Arnold Engineering Development Center). So both of those areas have a lot of PhDs. Cookeville also has a large hospital, larger than the hospitals in McMinnville and Manchester combined. But the cost of living in Cookeville is also more than the other two places.
What all are you looking for? Others on here would probably be glad to offer their impressions, too.
