Worked for us.
LOL! You guys are my kind of people! That totally sounds like something I would do.

The first year we moved to TN we hired a local neighbor lady to watch our youngest son during work hours. Took us a while to get the lingo and local traditions and such learned.
One day I called to check on my son who had a bit of a cold. Granny Fay (as everyone called the neighbor lady) said he was doing fine. He wanted to go out side and play really bad so she put a tobaggon on his head to make sure he kept warm. Now I am originally from New England, to me a tobaggon is a sled that 3 or more people ride on. I said " You put WHAT on his head??" It took her a good 5 minutes to find the words to explain to me that a tobaggon here is a ski cap, she had never heard of the sled type, I had never heard of the hat type. LOL!
One day my son got stung by a bee, Granny Fay called and told me this and said he was fine as she put some gas on him because she couldn't find any tobacco handy.......yea that took me a few minutes to figure out too, but now we do use gas on a bee sting, stops the sting immediately, but don't light a match!
Our "down the hill" neighbor Mr. Miller taught us about Poke Weed salad one day. I was raised to believe Poke weed and it's berries were very poisonous, so I explained this belief to him and asked if there are more varieties than I am aware of and if there are non poisonous varieties here? He said, "No, they only poisonous after they get so big". When they are small and young shoots, locals make a salad out of them. I wondered if that made him nervous about the ability of the folks picking the poke weed knowledge of "too big to pick". He said "Na, you only get real sick for a few days or so, maybe a week if they are two big, but it is worth it." I decided not to try THAT local delicacy.
Another day I was standing in their yard talking with Mrs. Miller when Mr. Miller and their son (late 20's at the time) were working on their electric fence. Mr. Miller detached part of the fence wire from a corner pole and said "Son, come hold this for me so I can get the new piece" Son says "That power off pa?" Mr. Miller says "I got hold of it don't I?" So son takes it from Dad and gets shocked and jumps around the yard trying not to cuss up a storm. Dad is laughing so hard nearly peed himself (so he said) and says " Works every time!"
Local cheep thrills???

Livin' my life here in the TN sticks, I can't forget the first trip to MI. I had a pizza guy behind me cussin' and givin' me the finger at a redlight. I guess the folks behind him was pee'd off to as I heard some horns honkin' back yonder. All I knew is I was not making a left turn until I seen a green arrow,,, but as I figured out the hard way....there was no green arrow. The left lane red light stayed lit solid when time to stop and wait, then would flash red steady as a clock when it was time to turn left. I sat through a couple redlights and listen to them behind me before putting in park and gettin' out to tell the pizza guy I don't run redlights. He called me everything but a white boy and it ended with redlight flashes ..it means ******* go....blankity blank ******* ..

Hey, I'm from TN sticks where we don't have a redlight in our town period. I don't see two redlights a month as I stay away from bigger towns even here in TN but when I do head to a bigger town, I've only seen green arrows for left turns under intersections.. Ole hermit they call me, but I never did care for the towns with more than 3-800 folks as they seem to wanna live life in such a hurry. We out here live day by day, no reason for hurry.

I moved from SW FL. My first fall here I was driving home one night and someone kept throwing things at my car. At first I thought, 'oh, ha ha, stupid kids, real funny'. But I started getting mad because it kept happening. I was wondering just how many kids had lined up along the highway I was driving on. I mean it had been going on for like 20 minutes driving down this road in the middle of no where. Then I realized that it was leaves falling off the trees. In SW FL we have pine and palm trees. The leaves don't fall off. I'd never experienced that and was just blown away.

And then we went to Spencer one day, which is where our county's courthouse is located. We were at the post office right across the street and see prisoners walking away from the sheriff's office alone. My husband nearly went through the door after them- we'd both retired from law enforcement from a very large department in Florida - so our first thought was 'escapees'!!!! But the fact that they were just walking so casually stopped us in our tracks. They walked right over and into the courthouse. Apparently because it's such a small town and everyone knows everyone they just open the door and tell them to go to their courtdate - and they do!!!! That blew us away.

Oh - and after 5PM during the week and all weekend long, we have no sheriff's office. They keep regular 9-5 M-F business hours. If there is an emergency outside of the city limits the call gets routed to the Spencer PD and they have to call the sheriff and get him out of bed.

Gotta love small towns and nowhere land in between. Three towns share our only school here that only has 532 kids from k-8'th grade. Our counties only highschool is in a bigger town a good piece away. It's great living here but for some reason some outsiders think the worst of us country folks. The video is kinda funny though, even though it's simply not true lol.

Alexandria sounds like a great place but HARDLY qualifies as in the sticks at 40 miles on the outskirts of Nashville and less than 10 miles off I-40.

I drove to Vanderbuilt six months seeing doctors and Nashville is exactly 52 miles from here. I don't live in town, but between towns.Alexandria has about 800 folks, the next town in DeKalb we are between only has around 312 folks, next town up is about 350 folks. 532 kids make up our school that these three towns share as an only option, this school is k through 8'th grade.532 kids is not many being they are made up of three towns, but it's great though as everyone knows everyones kids, and folks are known and trusted when other kids need a ride.Where else can you pick up someone elses kids from school without a note or having to have the parent say it's ok.You just pull up after ball practice just after the busses leave and if theres kids needing a ride home..well they just hop right in and if need be, they'll be driven several miles to their house in the sticks.Locals don't care to spend ten bucks gas to drop a kid off needing a ride as sometimes it turns out they can't be there to get their kid either, so it circles around as folks helping folks. It does pay to know folks by name in three towns and know where they live. When you get on I-40 from Alexandria, theres nothing between Alexandria and Lebanon, several miles to Lebanon. Oh there is Watertown if we take hwy 70 towards Lebanon, but lol,,, whats there...

I love that. I experienced that in the opposite sense when we moved to South Dakota as a child. It was time for winter and we were going to "town" shopping for clothes, including tobaggons. I suppose everyone wondered how we were going to get them in our little car lol

When we first moved here 12 years ago on the NC side, there was one road where everyone gave a "little finger wave" when you passed by. I used to think "boy if this was NY you would really get the "finger".

Anyway I got used to it and thought it was kind of nice and I learned to do the nice little finger wave back.

Yesterday I was traveling on that road and very few people did the "finger wave". I thought it was kind of sad. It looks like some outsiders haven't adapted and things are changing..
