East Tennessee.......generally for now.
Hi all,
New to this interesting forum.
I love to get around and visit places. Lived in S. Oregon since 1990. Would like to move-on from a secure job at age 50 in 11 years; I'd have my 30 years in to officially "retire". East Tennessee appears much like this area; been quite happy here dispite the extermely lib. politics with Oregon; Portland, Salem and Eugene populations decide the fate of timber reliant towns.
Kinda' thought Asheville NC was just too far East. I want to work in the trucking industry after I give it up out here; want to benefit some other place for the rest of my life, and keep moving.
So......what is East Tennessee like in general/overall. Climate, weather, affordability, politics, work, ammenities, anything else pertinant or interesting? Multi-post and ramble please; tout your city or town. I'm interested in new places.
I kinda' hear that Knoxville's nice but really want to be in a smaller town of up to 20K folks.
Appreciate it!

Hey 1971gto, you would benefit to visit our fair city, as approx 180,000 in the city, and another 190,000 in the county. Knoxville is so spread out, with little communities, all over, and you could easily find one your size, such as Carter, Powell, Ft. City, Karns, Halls, Hardin Valley, and south is Seymour, and west it Farragut, and Northshore. WE are an hour and half drive to the greate Smoky Mtns, and only 30 minutes from the airport. So come check us out, a great place to retire.

Welcome to the forum! Might I suggest by reading the previous posts here on the forum(s) and also checking out http://www.city-data.com/city/Tennessee.html for info on cities in TN.
As bob said, please plan a visit. Nothing can tell you about an area like experiencing it for yourself.

Ever considered the Tri-Cities metro? It's even *more* patriotic and conservative than the Knoxville region (and that's saying something!).
Sorry, sorry, I must just be in a smartass mood.

That whole region looks appealing. Should I get a Blue Book for Tennessee to study along with this site. Sieverville, that area as well?
How is the region with flooding?

We don't flood much, TVA took care of that back in the1930s.
East Tennessee is a very pleasant place to live. There is so much to see and do now. My sister has been visiting me this weekend and she's just amazed at all that's going on. She keeps saying it's not at all what she expected.
We went downtown yesterday, stopped at the Farmers Market on KP, went to Market Square and looked around and browsed, had a wonderful dinner at Oodles (a wine bar). On Saturday, we had lunch at an Indian restaurant here in town then went to the Museum of Appalachia Tennessee Homecoming, had a great time listening to music and watching old time craft people. The music really was incredible. Every where you looked there was live music, either on stage or an improptu jam session. Foot tappin' bluegrass and mountain music.
Going to Roux Barb for dinner tonight. Tomorrow, we'll visit friends and go to Ijams.
Knoxville is a great place to live or to visit. And there are lots of trucking companies along.

Oh gosh, is the Museum of Appalachia Homecoming this weekend? Drat!!! I LOVE it there, especially on Homecoming. I guess I've missed this year's.
