My advice to anybody moving anywhere is rent before you buy. We thought we were in a great neighborhood in our first home here in the Memphis area - NOT! It went downhill really fast. We now live in Germantown and love it. There are a lot of safe areas in and around Memphis. You just have to know where to look. And not knowing what you are looking for, I really couldn't recommend any one area. But housing in the Memphis area sure is cheap. This area's cost of living is great!

Tenn Relo
We moved from the west coast of Fla 2 yrs ago and love it here.... no hurricanes, low taxes and insurance, 4 great seasons, low cost of living, nice people, etc etc etc... I'm in the business here and 65% of my customers are relocating from Fla to East Tenn. I would highly recommend it!

FL to TN, indirectly
We're also gonna move to TN next year from our last stateside location, FL. But there have been almost 20 years in between in Japan and Korea. And the prospect of leaving Asia is scary!
As expats in Tokyo and Seoul, walking the streets at 2am was always safe since strong arm crimes over here are almost unknown. Moreover, lawsuits are unheard of, health care is great and inexpensive, and the rice is wet and sticky.
Anyway, we are looking forward to re-joining American society on a couple of acres with a fab mountain view somewhere around Washington county. We'll be in eastern TN starting next week for a while and can't wait to sample the local flavors. Oh, where can I get some kimchi?

Goomba, there's a terrific Korean restaurant in Kingsport named Pepper Heads Cafe. The Pusan-born co-owner is a truly remarkable cook who prepares fantastic mondu, bulgogi & homemade kimchi, among other things...check it out if you get a chance:

Moving to TN
We have been waiting to move to tn for 2 years, now that we will be retiring in the next year, we just bought some property and will begin building by late summer.
We are also from south florida and HATE it. Why, because people are so rude even though you are pleasant to them. Too high stress living and way too many people and lets not even get into the traffic.
I'm still a little skeptical only because growing up in a city like south florida everything is within minutes away. In tn, especially where we are moving, nothing is closer than 30-40 minutes. But i guess you cant have everything you want. Still looking forward to getting OUT OF HERE.

We moved here from NY
from a small town on eastern Long Island. We absolutely love it here in TN-great neighbors, great church, great prices. After almost four years we can say it's the best thing we did in a long, long time.
We felt better and were finally motivated to lose those extra pounds we carried around. We realized we ate too much because of stress putting up with NY. We each lost 50 pounds and are both down to our ideal weight. We now exercise every day and enjoy life and better health at age 60. Why did we wait so long to move here?
Best wishes to all of you contemplating a move.

In retirement, why are you moving to a place where everything is 30 to 40 minutes away if that's important to you?
