True, but I don't think that is due to people moving here from elsewhere, that has been here long before now.

Thank for for saying what I thought but didn't have the gumption to write. I worry people will take it the wrong way. Well said!

We Live in Central Florida, currently have our home on the market and are looking for a move to Tennessee. I have lived here for 31 years and outside of living in Virginia for a year this is the only place that I have called home ( born in Ohio) , however I am so tired of living here. My family is here and that seems to be the only reason for me staying. I want to move out to the country where I can have at least 4 acres of land and a few horses, not have to worry about the nonsense stuff that goes on here. I want to be able to raise my kids in an environment that is positive and the quality of life is good. What suggestions does anyone have as far as rural/country towns? We don't mind buying a place that needs fixing up a bit, the houses down here are so expensive it's unreal. How are the schools up there? We have 2 in 3rd grade, a 3 year old and 2 in high school. Also, my husband has his own painting company down here, how are the jobs up there? Construction jobs down here are going to crap where you can't hardly survive now. I would appreciate any imput as I am researching cities in Tennessee and God willing that are house sells we will be moving up there, just would like some information on areas. I was looking into Sevierville, Savannah, Adamsville & Mursfreeboro, I saw some property with decent land amount fixer upper homes for about 89,000. Just need to know if the town is decent to live there or not.

Loving Tennessee

Have I missed anything?
|
There are those of us moving to Tennessee that really love the place. I grew up in a small country town back when it was possible to do that in south Florida. I miss the country life. Guys with pick-up trucks don't bother me because I am one of them. I love country music, bluegrass music, hunting, fishing, and etc. As far as the poor people and those without their teeth; God bless them. We have poor farm people right next to where we are building our house and they don't bother us at all.
I just hope the large influx of people moving to Tennesse does not change it too much. I would like to see some jobs come in for the local population. we will be semi-retired. I just hope the growth is better managed than it was here in Florida and the area does not change too much. If it gets too crowded we will go someplace else.
Our reasons for moving there have very little to do with money. It is nice that our cost of living will go down but we really want the quality of life and peace of mind that Tennessee offers.
I just wanted to let you know that there are some of us in Florida that enjoy what Tennesse is and have no intention of changing it to suit our needs when we get there.
I understand what you mean though because Florida was ruined by all the people moving in in the past twenty years or so.

my knid of thinking

In Florida most tax rates are about 21 mills or $21/per $1000 of valuation and we are supposed to be 100% value but it is really like 85% so in Florida a $100,000 would be taxed on $85,000 or 21 x 85 = $1785 IF you can find a place for $100,000!!! Average price of a home (not new) is $245K and new homes are $290k+. Except our esteemed legislature now wants everyone to pay higher sales tax so those who are fortunate to own real estate won't have to pay any taxes...gee, I wonder if they own property? Ya think?
We're moving to TN because we retire in 2 years and after working all of my life with pensions going broke, social security what it is, we can no longer afford to live in Florida. Also, at my age (60) I no longer wish to learn a new language (Spanish) as I'm already bi-lingual - I speak English and Southern!
I want to live where people don't look at me crazy if I say y'all or if I mention I can't attend their function because church is that night
I won't mind the cold because I'll have a generator if I have to to store extra food and can hibernate from Nov to April because I really like my husband of umpteen years and we can be together all the time and not go crazy
Because we like to read and be by ourselves
Because we don't like sitting in traffic
Because we don't want to be afraid to open our front door to a stranger
Because I like knowing who my neighbors are and that they raise their children to be respectful of my property
The list goes on and on - but it's time for me to make biscuits for dinner
So I'll see y'all on the Cumberland Plateau!

My kind of thinking exactly!!!!! WE wont be on the plateau but in the mountains..... Same thoughts though....

Check into the tri-cities area around Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol. They have a large population for the area but are still country. You can live in the countryside and still have a very short commute to work and schools. If you want to stay out of the traffic and mess like central Florida then stay out of Sevierville and Pigean Forge. The crime there isnt like Florida but it is crowded.
The tri-cities area is also home to East Tennessee State University so there is good opportunity for higher education for the kids, too.

Hi flybob63,
I agree with you (seeing as that is where I love and live: the Tri-Cities) but please don't forget ETSU is not the only option for higher education here. There is also North East State University, Milligan College, King College and branches of UT and Walters State University here.

Thanks for the info on the other colleges. I just knew about ETSU because I am looking into attending some classes there in the future.
One of the reasons we chose to move to Greene County is because it is within striking distance of the tri-cities and their shopping, schools, and etc.
We are going to be a little further out in the sticks than I think these people want to be. Our property is in Baileyton.
